The problem with change
Susan Nienow

I love change. Change is good. It shakes up my routine and forces me to work with something new. But, I just didn't like it when my cosmetic company discontinued my Mystic

Mauve lipstick. It had taken me eight color tries to hit on the perfect one, so I ran out and stocked up. should have enough until 2015. Every female know has become attached to a fashion trend - scarves, belts, long skirts. For me it was shoulder pads. It has taken me years to get over the no-shoulder

pads look. I need shoulders. It gives me authority. And I liked having my shoulders as the widest part of my body. But I have finally adjusted. Now I am hooked on trouser socks. They don't run like hose, and they wear well. I choose my shoes to go with them. When they go out of fashion, I will have to get a new shoe wardrobe as well as replacing whatever becomes the new 'trouser sock.'

It's been five years since I have worn jeans. I couldn't find any that fit, felt good and enhanced

my silhouette rather than spotlighted my... Now I have jeans that fit, and I love the bootleg look. Last week I heard a makeover expert say that the wide leg is flattering to everyone and that no one should wear skinny-leg pants. I no sooner got home from the store than I turned on the TV and caught the last few words of a fashion update: "The wide leg look will be giving way to a narrower leg this spring, accenting the ankle."

When the fall colors were in, I was in heaven - rich bronzes and warm golds. Clothes, decorative pillows, carpets were all in my colors. That was 1987. I have struggled through the blues and yellows, the citrus hues, and now that my colors are back, someone pasted sequins on everything. Change isn't limited to fashion. Just when I got used to serving an olive spread to guests, it disappeared from the store. It must have gone the same place the wheat bread did. I like the old bread. I don't want to have to find another kind of bread. I found a salad I like at a local restaurant with the perfect mix of ingredients - apples, sugared walnuts, greens, brie cheese and dried cranberries. Then a new chef arrived - and another. Now the sugared walnuts are onions and the dried cranberries are gone. After trying several brands of lotion, I discovered one that passed all the tests - not greasy, no heavy perfume, and it gave my skin a 'dewy, youthful look.' When it was gone, I searched the shelves of two drug stores and a discount retailer 47 bottles and tubes , but no lotion in a light blue bottle.

My other half says change isn't necessary when his wardrobe consists of jeans and khakis, plaid collared shirts and solid color golf shirts. Weather dictates his clothing choices, not fashion.
