Where are the Bon Air sidewalks?
Page Dowdy/Chesterfield Observer The Bon Air village area has been promised sidewalks and streetlights here since 1998. They may be finally on the way, says John McCracken. McCracken, Chesterfield's transportation chief, let his frustration with the state's highway department show when he reported to the Board of Supervisors that the village-enhancement effort, now estimated to cost about $3.9 million, was finally moving forward. "This is an embarrassment," McCracken said of the nine-year delay. "The community has been expecting this to be done." "We have been given every excuse in the world," Ed Barber said of Virginia Department of Transportation. The county has acquired the right-of-way, so mostly engineering and scheduling on the state's side has been holding things up in recent years. VDOT's regional office here offered no comment. VDOT received bids for the half-mile of sidewalks and streetlights in late November. Due to contract errors, however, they will have to re-advertise the project, says Don Kappel of the county's public affairs office. This was the second time the project was advertised and both ads have resulted in bids higher than the original estimate, said Kappel. VDOT will re-advertise in March. The Bon Air streetscape work is now anticipated to begin in the summer and be completed by the fall of next year.
