Part-time employee paid almost $132,000 a year

The former chief of Fire and Emergency Medical Services was paid $131,947 last year although he averaged slightly less than 40 hours a week. Bob Eanes' salary would make him the 13th highest paid county employee. He also is provided with a county vehicle.

Eanes retired in July 1999, and began his part-time job with the county a week later. In 2005, he was paid an average of $65.44 per hour.

Upon retirement, Eanes was earning about $51 per hour. Since then, he has received pay increases along with other county employees to arrive at his current hourly rate.

Eanes "provides leadership and general management guidance for the Office of Environmental and Security Management," according to a statement from the county's Public Affairs Department. His duties include education, training, budgeting and oversight of numerous environmental responsibilities and potential risks, including legal issues. He is also charged with developing a countywide security plan and assessing and monitoring the risk assessment of every county building.

In a prepared statement, County Administrator Lane Ramsey wrote that Chesterfield is receiving "over 40 years of leadership experience...at a fair rate of pay, and the contributions since Bob came back to work part-time have been significant...Chesterfield County [is] one of the most responsible communities in the country in environmental management...He also has been instrumental in the county's achievement of the highest level of certification from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality."
