CJW ranks #1 in cardiac and heart surgery in Virginia

CJW Medical Center is the number one hospital in Virginia for overall cardiac and heart surgery services, according to a recent HealthGrades study. The study placed CJW among the top five percent in the nation for these services. In addition, CJW's pulmonary and respiratory services rank among the top 10 percent in the country. As a result of the study findings, the hospital received HealthGrades Specialty Excellence awards in the cardiac, heart surgery and pulmonary areas. HealthGrades analyzed more than 5,000 hospitals throughout the United States.

Steven Genger has joined CJW Medical Center as director of the Cath Lab on the Chippenham campus. Previously, he was the cardiac cath lab and electrophysiology director at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Defense Supply Center Richmond employees volunteered during two recent events at Bensley Elementary School. Fire Inspectors

Glenn Sirico and Al Huston spoke to more than 100 first graders during Fire Prevention Week. Employees also participated during the school's annual Transportation Day where students learn about transportation careers. The Chesterfield County school system and police department also participated in the latter event.

The Chesterfield County Department of Economic Development has hired H. Garrett Hart III as the development manager for new business. Hart has over 25 years of economic development and marketing experience in both the private and public sectors.

Other organizational changes within the economic development department include Faith McClintic being named the development manager for the Meadowville Technology Park; Karen Aylward being named the development manager for existing, small and minority business; and Tina Shreve being promoted to project manager.

Chesterfield police officer Joseph G. Diman has received the Medal of Honor, Purple Heart and Combat Ribbon from the county. He was shot while responding to a domestic dispute earlier this year. He managed to subdue the suspect after his partner was fatally wounded.

The JCPenney Afterschool Fund has given a $10,830 grant to the Manchester Family YMCA for its program to keep children safe and help promote healthier lifestyles. Recent studies show that youth are at greater risk of involvement in crime, drug abuse and other destructive behaviors during the hours of 3-6 p.m. "We are honored to have an opportunity to provide this grant," said Greg Ely, store manager of JCPenney's Chesterfield Towne Center location. Each child aided by the grant will also receive a $50 JCPenney gift card.

Lucy Corr Village recently purchased a new 18-passenger mini bus following a two-year fundraising drive by the Lucy Corr Foundation. The wheelchair-accessible bus will be used to transport residents during recreational activities. The Philip Morris Employee Community Fund contributed $34,313 for the bus. The remaining monies were raised through an annual 5K run/walk and donations by local businesses and organizations.

Over a dozen Chesterfield County employees recently spent several hours volunteering for

Gateway Homes, a transitional home for the mentally ill. As a community service project, the employees pruned shrubs and trees near the buildings, mulched and cut up fallen trees. Each year, Gateway serves about 50 individuals with serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression.

Kristian "Woobie" Merell is the owner of a "new" 1987 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser station wagon. Priority Toyota and Automotive Accessories Unlimited gave the car a makeover for Merell.

Sarah Boehling, a seventh grader at Midlothian Middle School won Young Miss Model of the Year 2006 for her performance in runway, fashion print, TV beauty, swimsuit and jeans competitions during the International Modeling and Talent Association convention in New York City. She has joined Wallace Model Management.
