J.B. Watkins Elementary celebrates 40th anniversary

Anniversary celebration, 10 a.m., J.B. Watkins Elementary, 501 Coalfield Rd. All current and former staff members, principals, students, parents and community members are invited to celebrate the school's 40th anniversary. There will be guest speakers, music, refreshments, the opening of a time capsule and a commemorative tree planting. Rain date is Nov. 29. For information, call Marlene Scott, 378-2530.

LOOKING AHEAD...

As part of the "Get in the Know" series for seniors, the LaPrade Library, located at 9000 Hull Street Rd., will host "I Been Free Mo'n a Year: Free Black and Slave Women Resources at the Library of Virginia" on Thurs., Nov. 30 from 10:30 a.m.- noon. Library of Virginia research archivist Derek Gray will show you how to start researching the genealogy of 19th-century African-American women with an emphasis on resources available at the Library of Virginia. Refreshments will be served. This program is recommended for adults ages 55 and older. Call 276-7755 for more information. Sponsored by the Friends of Chesterfield County Public Library and the Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation Department.

Creative Movement for Mommy and Me, Nov. 30-Dec. 21, 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m., Bensley Community Building, 2900 Drewry's Bluff Rd. Join your toddler or preschooler as they learn the joys of movement and build healthy habits that will last a lifetime. The course features dancing, music and songs and is recommended for those ages 18 months to 4 years. Cost is $10. Registration required. For information, call 275-5321.

Students from Cosby High School will present Grease!, the school's first theatre performance, at 7:30 p.m. each night on Thurs., Nov. 30-Sat., Dec. 2, at the school. Tickets are $6, senior citizens are free. Call 639-8340 for advance tickets.

Design for Excellence Community Forum for Matoaca District, Mon., Dec. 4, 7 p.m., Cosby High School, 14300 Fox Club Pkwy. Chesterfield County Public Schools will host a community forum to detail its six-year strategic plan for how the school system will achieve excellence. Registration is not required - all are welcome. A community forum will be held in each district. Dates for other forums will be announced soon.
