CRIME WATCH
Police make several sex arrests

In the past several weeks, there has been a spike in sex crime arrests in the county.

Last week, Chesterfield police arrested 73-year-old Boyd C. Johnson, of the 10200 block of Cherlyann Road near Lake Crystal, for indecent liberties with a child by a custodian. The alleged family incident occurred over 30 years ago in 1975, according to two witnesses. Police policy prohibits releasing additional details.

Timothy S. Smith was arrested Nov. 27 for aggravated sexual battery and object sexual penetration that allegedly occurred on Jan. 16 last year. Smith, 35, lives in the 15100 block of Alderwood Court of the Pheasant Run neighborhood off Harrowgate Road south of Chester. Smith was previously arrested on two charges each of aggravated sexual battery and indecent liberties with a child by a custodian on Sept. 14. As a result of those charges, police say another victim came forward.

Michael L. Litchford, 35, of the 2400 block of Swareout Avenue, has been arrested for aggravated sexual battery, forcible sodomy and indecent liberties with a child by a custodian. Police allege that the criminal act was committed on Feb. 1 of this year, but decline to release additional details to protect the victim.

The Powhatan Sheriff’s Office has arrested 31- year-old Wilbur Bernard Coleman, of the 6800 block of Newby’s Bridge Road, on one count of indecent exposure. A spokesman said Coleman was allegedly wearing a t-shirt, high heels and no pants on Nov. 30 in Powhatan. Chesterfield police are interested in questioning Coleman since he may have been involved in two similar incidents that occurred at a gas station in the 2700 block of West Hundred Road on consecutive nights in late November. A suspect was also seen dressed the same way in a store in the 10900 block of Midlothian Turnpike on Nov. 30.

Other indecent exposure incidents have been reported. At 5 p.m. on Dec. 2, a victim saw a suspect inside a store in the 13500 block of Midlothian Turnpike exposing himself. At 7:30 p.m. that same evening, victims inside a restaurant in the 11400 block of Huguenot Road witnessed a man outside the restaurant exposing himself. That suspect left when observed but returned and laughed in the direction of the witnesses.

In other police reports:

Chippendale Drive. At 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 1, the suspects knocked on an apartment door in the 4000 block, and when one of the victims answered the door, he was hit in the face with the butt of a handgun. One of the suspects fired a shot into the apartment and demanded money. With cash in hand, the suspects fled with the victim’s dog chasing them. A few more shots were fired at the apartment.

Hollow Wood Court. The victim was upstairs in his residence in the 3400 block at 10 a.m. on Dec. 1 when he heard glass breaking. He found one of his rear windows broken out and saw the suspects in his backyard. When one of the suspects reached inside through the broken window, the victim jabbed the suspect’s arm with a knife, and all of the suspects fled.

Hull Street Road. The suspect entered the East Coast service station in the 10100 block shortly before 11 p.m. on Nov. 28 with a rag over his face to conceal his identity. The clerk did not know if he was armed but gave him the money in the cash register. He made her lie on the floor so he could make his getaway.

Jefferson Davis Highway. The married victim was partying with a woman he had just met at a residence in the 8800 block during the early morning hours of Nov. 28. A male friend of the woman showed up, stayed for awhile, and then left, returning with three other males, one armed with a gun. They took the victim’s cash, cell phone and keys to his wife’s car. When the victim went outside, he discovered the car’s stereo was missing.

Midlothian Turnpike. Shortly before noon on Dec. 3, the victim and another store employee were walking across the parking lot in the 7200 block to make a bank deposit when they saw the suspects. The men demanded the employees hand over the bag, and they did, fearing that one suspect had a weapon under his shirt.
