Defeating Greenacres rezoning could be a turning point
Dear Editor,

It may not have the impact of the battle cry "Remember the Alamo," but it can be the awakening call for residents of Chesterfield County. Why are we always willing to sit back until the fight comes to our neighborhood before a few rise in a fruitless attempt to stop the bully from having his way?

The Donegal Glen stand [on the Greenacres rezoning] can be that which stirs the silent majority into reclaiming our county and our government. We all have sat back and allowed our county officials to play their power games at the expense of our safety, education, drinking water, transportation and on and on. Most district representatives seem to have the belief that quantity, no matter the cost, is the measuring stick for their 15 minutes of fame. There always seems to be three looking out for the other and when [they] felt threatened, they turn to abstentions.

In the past few months, I have seen two [zoning] cases that I feel are signs that the time has come for the citizens to mass and reclaim Chesterfield. The one I was involved in was the traffic light on Route 360 at Duckridge Boulevard. Not only did [Matoaca Planning Commissioner Wayne] Bass and [Matoaca Supervisor Renny] Humphrey cross boundary lines in support, they spoke out against fellow members who chose to abstain. Secondly, [I hope] Donegal Glen will be our wake up call. In both cases, the communities chose to stress the consequences instead of pointing fingers and name calling.

Donegal Glen's next hurdle is Feb. 28 before the board of supervisors. The time to fight is now. Don't wait for your neighborhood to be affected. We should all go on the 28th and take a stand for our county. "Donegal Glen" is the battle cry, saving Chesterfield County is the brass ring. If you get the Chesterfield Observer, you should be at the meeting on Feb. 28. If not now, then when will you stand up?
