New sheriff in town

Lt. Col. Dennis S. Proffitt was sworn in as the county's new sheriff last week by Circuit Court Judge Frederick G. Rockwell. Proffitt's predecessor, Sheriff Clarence G. Williams Jr., retired Feb. 1 after 37 years in law enforcement. Proffitt will serve until a sheriff is elected this November. He plans to run for the office.
