Newspaper should have run Hastings' photo The January 24th edition's coverage "The Race for Matoaca's Supervisor seat is wide open" appears to carry a seemingly innocuous slight to one of the other prominent candidates - Mr. Bill Hastings. Specifically, the absence of his photograph among the contenders. The article provides an evenhanded presentation of Matoaca's political lay of the land. But, it is the way the paper's presentation appears to cater to the tendency to read the headlines, then the caption of the accompanying photograph, go no further, and in this case is led to make the assumption there are only three viable candidates in the pending race. As a member of the Republican county committee, I could easily defer to a stereotypical partisan political business as usual position, "Too bad for them, but good for us." But, it could have been the other way around. The order of the day and your responsibility to all of Chesterfield County is accuracy and equity. Thank you for rectifying this and keeping your readers informed. At press time for that story, the newspaper had not received a photo of Hastings. Editor |
