Motorist aide struck on Rt. 288

Suspect
A Virginia State Police Motorist Assistance Aide was struck and injured by a vehicle last week while removing a mattress from the northbound lane of Route 288 about half-mile north of Route 10.

According to police, David Hancock had just gotten out of his patrol car around 7:20 p.m. on Feb. 14 when he and his vehicle were hit by a 2001 Land Rover Discovery driven by 29-year-old Jaime Campbell of Richmond.

Campbell had just merged onto Route 288 from Route 10 when she swerved to avoid the mattress in her travel lane. She apparently lost control of her vehicle and struck Hancock when she swerved back to the right.

Hancock was flown to VCU Medical Center by the State Police Med-Flight helicopter. His injuries were extensive but were not considered lifethreatening.

Campbell is charged with reckless driving. She was not injured in the collision.

Stabbing suspect goes to court

Kip Tashawn Burns, 24, of Midlothian, appeared in Richmond General District Court on Feb. 8 on charges that he stabbed his girlfriend in late December and left her to die in a storage unit in south Richmond.

According to police, Burns attacked his 18-year-old girlfriend during an argument on Dec. 30 and stabbed her more than 20 times. He left her bleeding and seriously injured inside a locked storage unit on Midlothian Turnpike.

Burns is charged with malicious wounding and abduction. He is being held without bond after being extradited from North Carolina.

Bermuda Hundred makes National Register

Bermuda Hundred has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The 17th-century Chesterfield village was the first permanent town in the New World. Bermuda Hundred was founded by the Virginia Company in 1613 and named after the original 100 families who lived there.

The seven houses, church, schoolyard and cemetery that remain there will be studied by archaeologists, who expect to discover artifacts dating back to the pre- Jamestown era.

Female robber hits credit union

A woman robbed the Virginia Credit Union, located at 1200 Koger Center Boulevard, around lunchtime on Feb. 9. According to police, the suspect gave the teller a note that demanded money and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. No one was injured during the robbery.

The suspect is described as an African-American female, ages 22-24, 5'4" tall, weighing 130-150 pounds. She wore sunglasses, a black stocking cap, black quilted jacket and blue jeans with gold trim or scroll work.

Police seek serial robbery suspect

The Chesterfield Police Department is seeking a suspect in connection with seven robberies at businesses in the Midlothian Turnpike corridor between Jan. 21 and Feb. 12.

In each incident a male suspect entered the business, displayed a gun, ordered the employees to the floor, and then demanded money. No one has been injured during the robberies. The robberies occurred on Jan. 21 at Cato, 271 Wadsworth Drive, at 4:45 p.m.; Jan. 26 at Subway, 1221 Carmia Way, at 7:50 p.m.; Jan. 29 at Payless ShoeSource, 12221 Chattanooga Plaza, at 8 p.m.; Feb. 3 at Quiznos, 9101 Midlothian Turnpike, at 8:40 p.m.; Feb. 5 at It's Fashion, 7429 Midlothian Turnpike, at 6:49 p.m.; Feb. 9 at Flower Market, 10060 Midlothian Turnpike, at 5:45 p.m.; and on Feb. 12 at Subway, 10433 Midlothian Turnpike, at 8:10 p.m.

The suspect is described as a heavy set black male in his mid to late 30s, about 5'9" tall, with a rough complexion or facial scars.

Chesterfield woman killed in crash

A Chesterfield woman was killed on Valentine's Day morning in a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Route 288 and Courthouse Road.

According to police, Pamela D. Hutson, 47, of the 10000 block of Melissa Mill Road, was heading up the northbound ramp from Route 288 to Courthouse Road when she lost control of the 2001 Nissan she was driving, ran off the left side of the road and overturned in the woods. Hutson was not wearing a safety belt and was thrown from the vehicle. She died at the scene.

Police say excessive speed was a factor in the crash.

Fires damage businesses

Two county businesses were damaged by fire overnight on Feb. 8.

About 1:30 a.m., firefighters were called to ALSCO Metals Corp., an aluminum recycling plant on Reymet Road, after an equipment malfunction caused a fire in the production area. The blaze was quickly put out.

About an hour later, crews were dispatched to Jersey Mike's in the 4500 block of Commonwealth Centre Parkway when a fire broke out in the kitchen area. That blaze took about 45 minutes to contain.

No one was injured in either fire.
