JTCC board elects new officers

A. Jay Behr, a member of the John Tyler Community College (JTCC) Foundation Board since 1998, was recently elected chairman of the board. Behr, who had been vice chair, is retired from Kraft Foods - Nabisco Biscuit Division.

John Settle Jr., a senior vice president at SunTrust Bank, will serve as vice chair. Rick Torres, who joined the board in 1999, was re-elected treasurer. Torres is the chief operating officer of Best Practices.

Peter Marmerstein, CEO of CJW Medical Center, was elected as a new member to the board.

An oil painting by JTCC student Martha Brogley entitled "Under the Florentine Roofs - Secret Gardens" has been named the winner of the 2007 JTCC Foundation Art Award. Brogley, who has been painting for more than 50 years, says her award-winning artwork was inspired by a photograph she took during a trip to Italy. She is a mother of seven, and began taking art classes at JTCC in the late 1990s.

Evelyn Hunt of Classic Realty Services in Midlothian was awarded the 2006 WCR (Women's Council of Realtors) of the Year Award by the Virginia Association of Realtors earlier this month. The WCR designation is awarded to realtors who exhibit knowledge and skills in business, leadership and dedication to quality education and professional networking.

Martha Richardson, a third-grade teacher for gifted students at Greenfield Elementary, has been selected Chesterfield County's Outstanding Teacher of the Gifted for 2006. She has taught gifted learners for 22 years, five of which have been in the center-based gifted program in Chesterfield schools

Ross Everett Newcomb (Troop 874), Brandon D. McAlpine (Troop 819), Ryan Michael Horn (Troop 837), and James R. Phifer, Stephen Alexander Phillips and Christopher Charles Lillard (all of Troop 806) have attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

The Chesterfield County Council of PTAs/PTSAs recently honored more than 200 students who competed in its annual Reflections program. Of those, 23 students will represent the county at the program's district level. This year's competition drew nearly 2,800 submissions, a 22 percent increase over last year, in the areas of literature, musical composition, photography and visual arts.
