Background checks drive away some coaches
Dear Editor,

I have recently decided to stop volunteering in Chesterfield County due to a new fingerprinting background check requirement. Chesterfield County Senior Assistant County Attorney Michael Chernau has notified me I must be fingerprinted if I want to volunteer as a coach.

I was wondering how other Chesterfield County volunteer coaches felt about the fingerprinting requirement?

I am a law-abiding citizen and have not been accused of, charged with or convicted of any child sex crimes. In my opinion, the fingerprinting addition goes too far and is an invasion of my privacy.

I am listed in neither the Virginia State Police Sex Offender Registry nor the United States Department of Justice Sex Offender Public Record.

I moved to Chesterfield in 1973. I bought a home in 1978 and still live in my Brandermill residence. I have been a volunteer coach in Chesterfield County since 1990. I support the background check process and don't want convicted sex offenders or child predators coaching young children.
