Registration underway for Head Start program

Head Start registration is underway for the 2007-2008 school year. This federally funded preschool program is available to three and four year olds from low-income families in seven elementary school zones: Bellwood, Bensley, Chalkley, Ettrick, Falling Creek, Harrowgate and Hopkins.

Chesterfield has a total of 196 Head Start slots that administrators hope to fill by mid- June.

To be eligible, children must be at least three years old by Sept. 30, their family income must be at or below federal income guidelines, and they must live in a Head Start attendance zone. Parents of children with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Head Start is provided at no cost to families and offers a variety of experiences to help youngsters grow educationally, socially, physically and mentally. Every day in Head Start, children receive a nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack. Family services and community resources are provided for each Head Start family.

Children who will attend kindergarten in 2008-2009 are given priority for Head Start enrollment. Families interested in learning more may call 743-3699.
