Salminen is a deserving Republican candidate for Matoaca supervisor

Dear Editor,

I took exception to the article "Chosen by default?" in the Mar. 14 edition of this newspaper and to the specific characterization that since Kevin Salminen has now become the only Republican running for the Matoaca District supervisor that we are somehow at a disadvantage come November. The most important part of any election is not the name (or name recognition) on the ballot, but the candidate's vision for his district and constituents, and Kevin has a clear vision for Matoaca. Anyone who has taken five minutes to talk to Kevin about what he wants to accomplish as supervisor knows that he has a distinct plan for the future of this district. Kevin's plans for managed growth and better city planning are not just Republican ideals only, but common sense approaches to a rapidly growing community.

The plan of using the BPOL tax to fund the capital needs of our schools ($10 million) and the remainder to fund the maintenance construction of our overburdened roadways ($5-10 million) are not new ideas but fair and smart ones. Kevin may not be as well-known as some others, but it is ideas and actions that should get votes and win elections. Kevin Salminen has my support for Matoaca supervisor whether he's the only one or one of many running because he has the right ideas for Chesterfield's future.

I urge all Matoaca voters to support him.

Jody L. Wilcox
