Comcast awards scholarships to six Chesterfield seniors

The Comcast Foundation has awarded six seniors from county high schools $1,000 scholarships. They are Katlyn Allen (James River High School), Stephani Alley (Matoaca), Cayce Condit (Thomas Dale), Andrea Elkovich (L.C. Bird), Tariq Elliotte (Manchester) and Stephanie Kaslauskas (Monacan).

The scholarships were part of 58 awards throughout Virginia, recognizing students' leadership skills, academic achievement and commitment to community service. Comcast worked with high school principals, guidance counselors, and administrators to select the recipients, all of whom are continuing their education at four-year institutions across the country. In the seven years since the Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program began, it has awarded more than $7.5 million in college scholarships.

Reams Road Elementary School has been selected by the Virginia Department of Education as a 2007 Title I Distinguished School. It recognizes honors schools for increasing achievement levels of economically disadvantaged students. Reams Road Elementary was recognized for maintaining full accreditation and making adequate yearly progress for two consecutive years, as well as for having mean test scores for both English and mathematics at the 60th percentile or higher. Reams was one of 136 schools in Virginia honored for success during the 2005-06 school year.

Last week, Bill Hastings received a Conservation medal from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. For the past 25 years, he has taken students from Thomas Dale High School on ecology oriented field trips with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and other organizations. Hastings continues to serve on the State Geology Board and is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for supervisor in Matoaca District.

The Maggie L. Walker Governor's School team placed fourth in the national finals for the "We the People" competition. The Chesterfield residents on the team were Erik Larsen, Mark Guerci, Isshin Teshima, Andy Rudd, Alex Chiou, Ena Dekanic, Liz Davidson, Cameron Williams, and Kelly Wolenberg.
