Registration underway for area's first Miracle League

Registration is currently underway for the region's first Miracle League, which brings the game of baseball to children with disabilities. The league is open to children ages 3-21 with physical and mental disabilities in Chesterfield and surrounding localities.

This month, construction will begin on the Richmond chapter's first "Miracle Field" at the Lloyd C. Bird High School Sports Complex. Specially designed to accommodate children with physical handicaps, the field is expected to be ready in time for September games.

The group is also currently working with Henrico County to build a second field there.

The Miracle League is a national organization with the goal of bringing the game of baseball to children with disabilities around the globe. The Miracle League Association serves children with disabilities that cause them to be excluded - whether intentionally or not - from conventional youth baseball leagues.

Through funding by sponsors and the commitment of volunteers, the Miracle League builds custom-designed fields with cushioned synthetic turf that allow children in wheelchairs and walkers to glide unrestricted to their positions without fear of injury. For many families, the Miracle League has given children with special challenges the first opportunity to participate in a team sport as a member of an organized league.

The Miracle League of Richmond Chapter was established in April 2005 and is the first in Virginia. Two years ago, the chapter began partnering with local businesses, organizations and individuals to build the region's first Miracle League field in Chesterfield County.

Although local little leagues currently offer playing opportunities for challenged youth, the Miracle League enhances the existing programs by providing a safe, flat surface for disabled children and young adults to play on. Currently, each school system in metro Richmond serves approximately 2,000-8,000 children with special needs.
