Join America's birthday celebration at the library

In The Spotlight

Independence Day Celebration, June 28 at Ettrick-Matoaca Library and July 3 at Bon Air, Central, Chester, Clover Hill, Enon, LaPrade and Midlothian libraries. Check with your local branch for times. Celebrate America's birthday at the library with unique activities and refreshments. This program is recommended for children of all ages. Registration is required and begins two weeks prior to the program. Part of the Children's Summer Reading Program. Thurs., June 28

Seventh Annual Family Fairway Frenzy, 9 a.m., The First Tee Chesterfield, Harry G. Daniel Park at Iron Bridge, 6600 White Pine Rd. For children and adults of all ages to enjoy the game of golf. No experience necessary. Fee is $30 and includes greens fees for two, cart, range balls, prizes and club rental for children. Lunch may be purchased for $5. Houdini, the live bunny rabbit, and Chicken Nugget, the live bantam rooster, will make appearances. This program is recommended for children of all ages. Registration is required. Sat., June 30

Historical program, 11 a.m.-noon, Chesterfield County Museum, 10020 Iron Bridge Rd. The Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia, will present "The Civil War in Chesterfield County." Historical society member Scott Williams will discuss the numerous military engagements that took place in the county during the Civil War and the impact the war had on the community. Concert, 7 p.m., Pocahontas State Park, 10301 State Park Rd. Singer-songwriter Steve Bassett, best known for his song, "Sweet Virginia Breeze," will perform traditional music played on Civil War-era musical instruments. Michelle Nixon & Drive will also perform. In addition to the evening concert, there will be an afternoon display and workshop featuring historic instruments of collector Chuck Kincaid, including a bugle, fife, guitar, mandolin, zither, violin and squeeze boxes. The workshop is from 2-4 p.m. Tickets are $4, and children 12 and younger are free. (The Pocahontas Premieres season pass does not apply to the Steve Bassett show.) LOOKING AHEAD... Thurs., July 5

ADHD/ADD skill-building and support group, 1 p.m. (grades 2-3), 2 p.m. (grades 4-5), 3 p.m. (grades 6-8), weekly through July 26, Chesterfield County Community Development Building, 9800 Government Center Pkwy. These group sessions will help children develop skills for success including organization, staying focused and managing feelings. Cost is $20. Sponsored by Chesterfield County Prevention Services.
