Virginia State Bar suspends local attorney

Suspect
Midlothian attorney Khalil Wali Latif's law license has been suspended for one year and one day due to misconduct. According to the Virginia State Bar, the court found Latif committed misconduct by failing to return unearned fees and by filing a petition with the Court of Appeals when his license was suspended. Latif was already under a one year and one day suspension for other misconduct.

The new suspension will begin on Oct. 28. He is also required to pay $2,900 in restitution to four former clients by Aug. 1. If he fails to comply with any terms, his license may be revoked.

Open garage crimes are up

Between June 15 last year and June 15 this year, there have been 23 residential break-ins where an open garage door served as the thieves' entry point. To combat these types of thefts, the Chesterfield County Police Department Crime Prevention Section is reminding residents to take preventive measures by closing and locking all garage and shed doors.

"Leaving a garage or shed door open is an invitation for thieves to help themselves to a homeowner's tools, sports equipment, alcohol from the garage refrigerator, and items from the family vehicles," said Crime Prevention Officer Bryan Miltenberger. "It can also lead to home burglary."

To learn how to avoid becoming a victim, please call the Crime Prevention Section at 674-7006 for a list of prevention tips.
