Montgomery
Design One Hair Salon and Spa, located in the Village Marketplace Shopping Center, will be cutting hair for kids who don't have any during a "Cut-a-Thon" on Aug. 13 between 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

The hair cutting event will benefit Locks of Love, a national nonprofit agency that provides hair pieces to disadvantaged children with medical hair loss. The agency estimates there are two million children under age 18 who have permanent hair loss.

Dr. Efstathios Spinos, neurointerventional radiologist at CJW Medical Center, is the first physician in the Richmond area to place Boston Scientific's Wingspan Stent System into a patient's artery in the brain. The Wingspan stent opens blocked arteries and quickly restores blood flow to brain tissue, assisting in the prevention of further strokes. CJW is one of only three medical centers across Virginia that has performed this procedure.

Chester resident Renee Moore has been named manager of member services operations and support at Virginia Credit Union. Moore, a graduate of Thomas Dale High School, joined the credit union in 1992 and was previously manager of the credit union's Southpark branch at 301 Temple Lake Dr. in Colonial Heights.

Kathryn Montgomery, a rising senior at James River High School, attended the Rockette Summer Intensive Program in New York City from July 8-13. Over 600 girls from 25 states and two Canadian provinces were considered for this class. To be considered, a dancer must be at least age 14 with a minimum of five years training in tap, jazz and ballet and attend a live audition or submit a video audition.

Richard Alford Sr. has joined his son, Rick Alford, at Minuteman Press in Midlothian. Rick Alford is the owner of Minuteman Press, and his father will be responsible for securing new business, promoting the company's services and client relations.

Midlothian resident Bill Grossman (www.swiftcreeklures.com) has been accepted to vend his artwork at the National Folk Festival in Richmond this fall.

Cathy Rossi of Midlothian has joined the loan origination team at C&F Mortgage Corporation after six weeks at Xinnix, The Mortgage Academy of Excellence, and is now a Xinnix Certified Originator (XCO).

Charles Eger of Chester has received the first $5,000 CarMax Math and Science Scholarship. He is a 2007 graduate of Clover Hill High School and plans to major in aerospace and ocean engineering at Virginia Tech.

Cuppy's Coffee & More recently opened at 8461 Midlothian Tnpk. The location includes a gourmet coffee drive-thru and offers a wide range of gourmet specialty drinks such as coffees, mochas, lattes, espressos and 100 percent real crushed fruit smoothies. The Chesterfield County Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on Aug. 14 at 10 a.m.

Thomas Fulghum and Art Heinz have been appointed to four-year terms on the John Tyler Community College Local Board.

Senior Planner Susan Blocher is retiring from the Chesterfield Planning Department after 30 years.

Lt. Robert D. Harris has retired after 28 years with the county including the last 23 years with the Emergency Medical Services Department.

Virginia State University has been ranked 94th among all colleges in Diverse Issues in Higher Education for awarding master's degrees to African-Americans in the 2005-2006 academic year. In master's degrees awarded to African-Americans in specific disciplines, VSU ranked among the top 10 in two areas (mathematics and statistics and English) and in the top 50 in four other fields.

Boy Scout Troop 800 recently visited the Double H Ranch in New Mexico during a 16-day tour and hiking trip. In all, 26 scouts and nine leaders went on the trip.
