Specialty centers, governor's schools set open houses

In addition to traditional high school programming, Chesterfield County Public Schools offers students the opportunity to participate in specialty center programs that target specific interests. Each comprehensive high school houses at least one specialty center.

Middle school students and parents interested in learning more about opportunities at the high school level are invited to attend several upcoming specialty center fairs and open houses. Students and parents are also invited to open houses at the two regional governor's schools.

During the specialty center fairs, students and their parents may visit booths, ask questions and pick up information. All specialty centers, the Chesterfield Technical Center and both governor's schools will participate in two information fairs on Oct. 14, from 2-3:30 p.m. at Monacan High, 11501 Smoketree Dr., and on Oct. 15, from 6:30-8 p.m. at Thomas Dale High, 3626 W. Hundred Rd.

• Oct. 23, 7 p.m. - International Baccalaureate Program at Meadowbrook High, 4901 Cogbill Rd.

• Oct. 23, 7 p.m. - International Baccalaureate Program at Midlothian High, 401 Charter Colony Dr.

• Oct. 24, 7 p.m. - Leadership and International Relations Specialty Center at James River High, 3700 James River Rd.

• Oct. 29, 7 p.m. - Mathematics and Science High School at Clover Hill High, 13900 Hull Street Rd.

• Oct. 30, 7 p.m. - Teaching and Learning Through Technology Specialty Center at Matoaca High, 17700 Longhouse Ln.

• Nov. 1, 6:30 p.m. - Appomattox Regional Governor's School for the Arts and Technology, 512 W. Washington St. in Petersburg.

• Nov. 7, 6:30 p.m. - Maggie L. Walker Governor's School for Government and International Studies, 1000 N. Lombardy St. in Richmond.

• Nov. 8, 7 p.m. - Visual and Performing Arts Specialty Center at Thomas Dale High, 3626 W. Hundred Rd.

• Nov. 12, 7 p.m. - Spanish Immersion Specialty Center at Manchester High, 12601 Bailey Bridge Rd.

• Nov. 12, 7 p.m. - Mass Communications Specialty Center at Manchester High, 12601 Bailey Bridge Rd.

• Nov. 13, 7 p.m. - Pre-Engineering Specialty Center at Lloyd C. Bird High, 10301 Courthouse Rd.

• Nov. 15, 7 p.m. - Health Sciences Specialty Center at Cosby High, 14300 Fox Club Pkwy.

• Nov. 19, 7 p.m. - Humanities Specialty Center at Monacan High, 11501 Smoketree Dr.

Applications for specialty centers and governor's schools will be available in middle school guidance offices starting Oct. 15. To apply to attend a specialty center, eighthgrade students must turn in their completed application by Dec. 7. Governor's school applications are due by Dec. 3.
