Expanding board will cost taxpayers

Dear Editor,

The Chesterfield Observer's online forum, www.Chesterfield2007.com, provides a good insight into candidates' responses to county issues.

In response to the question, "Should the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors be expanded to more than five members?," I was amazed and perhaps amused at the response of the candidates who, without reservation, said that we need to expand the number of board members.

We live in the 21st century with many communication tools at our disposal. I certainly know that it is not difficult for a board member to be in touch with constituents even if he/she is on business halfway around the world.

I question the capability of those candidates who, without further analysis, would like to increase the number of representatives on the board. They display a lack of understanding of the process, a fear of hard work, and a thoughtless readiness to spend the taxpayers' money.
