Upcoming programs help seniors "get in the know"

The county's libraries and parks and recreation department are cosponsoring several free "Get in the Know" programs for seniors ages 55 and older. They include:

Line Dancing Demonstration, Oct. 4, 10:30 a.m.-noon, LaPrade Library, 9000 Hull Street Rd. Join the Dancing Stars as they entertain you with their array of line dancing steps. Participation will be welcome following the routine.

Health Aging, Oct. 16, 10:30 a.m.-noon, Chester Library, 11800 Centre St. Join Diana Allin, vice chairwoman of the Chesterfield Council on Aging and senior clinician for the Chesterfield County Department of Mental Health and Support Services, for an interactive multimedia presentation and discussion about living and aging well. Factors influencing healthy aging, including nutrition and exercise, intellectual pursuits, faith, relationships with family and friends, socializing and community involvement, will be discussed. Cartoons and quotes from famous healthy-agers will keep the information entertaining as you learn how to remain emotionally happy and physically healthy.

Ghost Stories of Chesterfield County, Oct. 24, 10:30 a.m.-noon, Midlothian Library, 521 Coalfield Rd. Take a glimpse into some of the more famous and frightening ghost tales of Chesterfield County. Some of Chesterfield's more familiar historic homes and their haunting histories will be presented.

Chesterfield Graveyards, Nov. 1, 10:30 a.m.-noon, LaPrade Library, 9000 Hull Street Rd. In Chesterfield County, cemeteries can be found along busy streets, deep in the woods, adjacent to churches, on industrial sites and even in the front yards of suburban homes. The Cemetery Committee of the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia researches church, community, family and slave graveyards in the county. Join Rachel Lipowicz, editor of the committee's 1998 book, "Gone But Not Forgotten," for a look at the work being done to research, document and record graveyards in Chesterfield County.

Snapshots of Chesterfield's Past, Nov. 20, 10:30 a.m.-noon, Chester Library, 11800 Centre St. Celebrate the county's heritage with a program that discusses the history of the Chesterfield County Museum. From its beginning, the original 1749 Courthouse was the staging area for many historically important events in the county. It served until 1917 when a new courthouse replaced it. The reconstructed building today serves as a county museum with a new exhibit revealing 400 years of local history.

Four Smart Money Questions to Ask for Those in Retirement, Nov. 28 at Midlothian Library, 521 Coalfield Rd., and Dec. 6 at LaPrade Library, 9000 Hull Street Rd. Both sessions will be held from 10:30 a.m.-noon. This program will address four smart money questions everyone in retirement should ask themselves.

Fitness for Older Adults, Dec. 18, 10:30 a.m.-noon, Chester Library, 11800 Centre St. Learn tips on staying healthy and fit by a personal trainer from American Family Fitness.
