Meet your local firemen at station's open house
Fire Station Open House, Sun., Oct. 14, 1-5 p.m., Fire Station #4, 2600 Polo Pkwy. The Bon Air Volunteer Fire Department will host an open house to mark Fire Prevention Week, which is Oct. 7-13. There will be tours of the station and chief hats and balloons for the kids. Bring in a copy of your escape plan (on 8.5" x 11" paper) for display and enter into a drawing for a chance to win a bicycle. Nature hike, 10-11 a.m., Rockwood Nature Center, Rockwood Park, 3401 Courthouse Rd. Children ages 3-4 will take a short hike to discover the changing colors of the leaves. Fee is $4 per child. Oktoberfest, noon-4 p.m., American Legion Hall, 901 Otterdale Rd. The Brandermill Midlothian-Woodlake Lions Club will host its first Oktoberfest to raise money for the blind and hearing impaired in the community. There will be German food, beer, wine, music and a German car show. All are invited to eat, play games, dance and socialize. Free eye screenings will be available along with the latest information on sight and hearing advances. Tickets are $25 for adults for food, $10 for the German beer tasting, $5 for ages of 13-20, and ages 12 and under are free. Healthy Aging, 10:30 a.m.-noon, Chester Library, 11800 Centre St. Join Diana Allin, vice chairwoman of the Chesterfield Council on Aging and senior clinician for Chesterfield County Department of Mental Health and Support Services, for an interactive multimedia presentation and discussion about living and aging well. The county's libraries and parks and recreation department are co-sponsoring this free event, part of the "Get in the Know" program for seniors ages 55 and older.
