Run will raise money to help children with disabilities

The Manchester High Success Program and cross-country team and Cracker Barrel restaurant are sponsoring the Frostbite Run to raise money to send two children with disabilities to summer camp. The Manchester Frostbite Run will take place at 2 p.m. on Nov. 30 at the track at Manchester High School, 12601 Bailey Bridge Rd. Registration for the 5K race costs $10, and registration for the onemile race costs $5. Prizes donated by local businesses will be awarded to winners and participants. To sign up for the run or for more information, call 739-6275 ext. 170.

This effort to help children with disabilities grew out of ties that Manchester students have forged over the past three years with the Susan Tom family of California. The family includes 13 children, 11 of whom have disabilities and have been adopted by Tom.

The Success Program at Manchester High offers support as students transition into high school. Each year, Success students write to Tom, who surprised them in October by coming to speak at Manchester and L.C. Bird High School about choices, setting goals and overcoming adversity. In memory of Anthony Tom, who died in 2004, Success Program students are working to raise $5,000 to send two local children to Victory Junction Gang Camp in North Carolina and to help the camp purchase items on its wish list.
