Prevention Services releases winter class schedule

Prevention Services, a division of the county's Mental Health Support Services, is offering the following classes this winter:

• Beyond Divorce - This is an evening course for recently separated men and women who are focusing on managing the emotional impact of divorce and setting new directions as single people. Sessions will be held on Mondays, Jan. 14-Mar. 3, from 6:30-8 p.m., at Chesterfield Prevention Services, 9842 Lori Rd., suite 101. The fee is $55. Contact: Karl Kalber, 717-6635.

• Coping with Your Child's Behavior: The Preschool Years - This course for parents teaches practical ways to deal with the challenging behaviors of young children. The class will be held on Tuesdays, Jan. 15-Mar. 4, from 6:30-8 p.m., at St. Mark's Church, 11551 Lucks Ln. The fee is $50. Contact: Whitney Kern, 717-6547.

• OUR Space: Support for Teens Recovering from Loss - OUR Space is an ongoing support group for adolescents, ages 13-17, who are experiencing grief following the deaths of parents or siblings. This group will provide information about grief and coping strategies, as well as the opportunity to learn how other teens are coping during this difficult time. The group will be held on Wednesday afternoons, from 3:30-4:45 p.m., at The XZone (located in Southside Nazarene Church), 6851 Courthouse Rd. It is recommended that group attendance begin six weeks to two years after the loss. Pre-registration is required. There is no fee. Contact: Robin Jones, 717-6540.

• Magic Years Parenting Group - Magic Years is a play group for young parents with children (pregnancies to age 3). Participants may bring their child for play, information, support and fun. Topics will include understanding your child's behavior, toys that teach, enjoying your child with music, reading is important at any age, spoiling versus relationship building, handling challenging behaviors and many more. The topic will change each week. The group will be offered every other Thursday, 3:30-5 p.m., at Chester Christian Church, 4330 Curtis St. (at the corner of Curtis and Harrowgate Road).
