Johnson tapped as deputy county administrator

Johnson
William E. Johnson III returns to the Richmond area when he begins as Chesterfield's new deputy county administrator for management services starting Jan. 7. Johnson is currently city manager of College Park, Ga., and has previously served as deputy city manager of Richmond and county administrator and deputy county administrator in Prince George County. He has also held other high-level positions in Richmond and Louisa and New Kent counties.

Johnson will oversee the county's management services division, including the departments of real estate assessment, license inspector, general services, accounting, purchasing, internal audit, information systems technology, registrar and risk management. He also will serve as the liaison to the county's elected constitutional officers. As one of three deputy county administrators, Johnson will be paid an annual salary of $165,000 with $10,000 toward deferred compensation and $10,120 in lieu of a car allowance.

Johnson earned his bachelor's degree in accounting from Hampton University and his MBA from Averett College. He is a member of Kappa Alpha PSI Fraternity. Johnson also is a member of the International City/County Managers Association, and a member and national board member of the National Forum for Black Public Administrators.

"Mr. Johnson has distinguished himself in leadership roles throughout Central Virginia and beyond. We welcome him as an outstanding addition to our highly recognized team."

Dr. L. Ray Drinkwater has been named vice president of academic and student services at John Tyler Community College. He had been the college's dean of student services since 1987. In the years leading up to that appointment, Drinkwater held positions in counseling and student activities and served as interim dean of the Division of Arts and Sciences and the Division of Professional and Technical Studies. He also periodically teaches classes in history. John Tyler named Chris Pfautz as interim dean of student services.

A live reenactment of the Christmas story will take place at the Metro Richmond Zoo behind Grange Hall Elementary School off Hull Street Road at 8300 Beaver Bridge Rd. on Dec. 21, 22 and 23 at 7 p.m., 7:45 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Animals from the zoo are featured in the program, and admission and parking are free.

The family of Matthew G. Gwaltney has established a scholarship endowment in his memory. Gwaltney lost his life last April during the Virginia Tech killings, just weeks before he was to receive his master's degree in civil and environmental engineering. He was a former School graduate. The

5,000 Matthew G. Gwaltney Memorial Scholarship will be awarded for the first time this spring to a graduate of Thomas Dale High School who plans to study engineering, math, science or journalism in college. The Chesterfield Public Education Foundation will administer the scholarship and help select each year's recipient. The scholarship is endowed by the Gwaltney family with money that Matthew

Gwaltney had saved, by contributions to the Matthew G. Gwaltney Memorial Fund and by employees of Philip Morris USA, who requested a match through the company's employee matching gift program. Contributions to the Matthew G. Gwaltney Memorial Fund are being accepted and may be mailed to the Matthew G.
