Addressing winter problems with trees and shrubs
      In my short five and a half years here in Virginia, I have learned one thing about the seasons here: they are unpredictable. We can have snow on a Wednesday and be back in the 60s on Saturday. And just because it's January doesn't mean an 80-degree day is out of the question, nor is dipping into the 20s at night in late September.

Just do your best
      Today I went for my annual physical, so I can tell you with certainty that I am 45 years old (actually, I knew that before the physical), stand five feet, eight-and-three-quarters inches tall, and I weigh 209 pounds. I also can tell you that my doctor, no beanpole himself, says that my "ideal weight" is 169 pounds.

School board expands retiree health care proposal
      The Chesterfield County School Board voted last month to expand a proposed recommendation on retiree health care benefits. The board's action means that the school system will continue to provide Medicare supplement plans at no cost to all current retirees and will also provide this benefit to future retirees who have at least 30 years of service as of Jan. 1, 2009.

      The American Cancer Society is in need of volunteer drivers for its Road to Recovery program, which provides transportation for cancer patients to and from their treatments.

     The county's school board members were sworn-in for four-year terms during an investiture ceremony late last month. Top: Board members are (from left) Omarh Rajah, Matoaca District; Dianne Pettitt, Clover Hill District; David Wyman, Dale District; Patty Carpenter, Midlothian District; and Marshall Trammell, Bermuda District. Rajah (bottom left) and Carpenter (bottom right) are new to the board this year.
