Bon Air Walk case is headed to circuit court
      Following rejection of a tentative subdivision plat approval, a five-acre case is headed to court. "We'll be seeing [Chesterfield County] in circuit court," said attorney Carrie Coyner as she left with her client. The planning commission last week voted 4-1 to deny the plan to put six homes on the parcel at the intersection of Buford Road and Sunview Lane in Bon Air.

Sen. John Watkins defends impact fee bill
      State Sen. John Watkins defended the concept of his Senate Bill 768 on impact fees last week, calling the current proffer system "a backdoor tax increase." County supervisors may approve a nominal increase in proffers at this week's board meeting.

Bailey Bridge summer band camp
      Bailey Bridge Middle School Band Boosters will host a camp this summer open to all rising seventh- through 12th-grade county band students. The camp will be held at Manchester High School on July 28-Aug. 8 from 8 a.m.-noon. Cost is $120 per student, and includes a souvenir water bottle and t-shirt.

Snake survives, two dogs perish in house fire
      An Albino Corn Snake was rescued, but two pitbulls weren't so lucky when a house caught fire on Wareham Road earlier this month. On May 14 around 1 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the 9300 block of Wareham Road for smoke coming from a residence. Dispatch notified crews there was a pitbull in the home.

Get ready to sit in Powhite toll traffic
      Motorists traveling northbound along the Powhite Parkway mainline toll plaza will experience significant morning rush hour delays beginning Tues., June 3, as toll lanes are reduced from nine to six lanes. The three-lane closure marks the beginning of the northbound installation of express lanes. This traffic situation is expected to last for 90 days.

VDOT approves road contract
      The Virginia Department of Transportation recently awarded a $154,000 contract to Remac, Inc., of Gasburg, Va., to seal pavement cracks along primary routes in Chesterfield, as well as Hanover, Brunswick, Prince George and Dinwiddie counties. Work should be complete by December.

Chesterfield registrar answers State Board
      Chesterfield Registrar Larry Haake answered his critics on the State Board of Elections last Friday, but he doesn't think they liked what he had to say. In prepared remarks, Haake acknowledged mistakes were made during the Feb. 12 Democratic primary, calling it a "regretful situation," and said he would "ensure it doesn't happen again.

      Clover Hill Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Carole Marable and Grange Hall Elementary School special education teacher Tina Bowman have been selected as two of eight educators statewide to receive Virginia Lottery Super Teacher Awards. Recipients were selected from more than 1,800 nominations submitted by the public.

      Ricky Hill, a student at Midlothian High School, captured this photo of a white squirrel that's taken up residence in an old oak in his backyard at Old Buckingham in Midlothian. The Hill family's research revealed the squirrel might not be an albino as first thought, but instead, a rare species that's seldom seen.

Volunteers needed for county chamber's Celebration of the Vine
      The Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce is looking to build on the outstanding success of last year's Celebration of the Vine with this year's festival scheduled for June 28. Fifteen Virginia wineries have already reserved a spot at the festival. Along with the wineries, food, crafts and music will be available.
