School system names 2009 Teacher of the Year

Winter
Nicole Winter is the 2009 Teacher of the Year for Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS). Winter, a National Board Certified Teacher, teaches history at Cosby High School, where she also founded and sponsors the Beta Club.

In nominating Winter for the award, Principal Brenda Mayo and Cosby High's other top administrators praised her as a humble leader and an effective teammate. It was noted that all of Winter's students passed their history SOL tests.

Winter has taught at Cosby High since the school opened in September 2006. She taught at Manchester High School from 1992 to 2006. Since 2003, she also has taught online classes through CCPS' Coordinated Studies Department. She is an adjunct faculty member in Virginia Commonwealth University's Clinical Faculty program, and she leads Cosby High's professional learning community focused on Creating Independence Through Student-Owned Strategies, which is a professional development program designed to help every student learn more effectively.

Winter earned her bachelor's degree in history from the College of William and Mary and her master's degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Virginia.

Annually, every county school selects its Teacher of the Year, then a committee chooses the countywide Teacher of the Year from those honorees. CCPS submits its Teacher of the Year nomination to the Virginia Department of Education, which selects eight regional Teachers of the Year, then chooses the Virginia Teacher of the Year from those eight.
