Fire-Setters program helps snuff out junior arsonists
      Suspicious fires come in many forms: a vacant house that burns to the ground for seemingly no reason, a vehicle that mysteriously flames up while it's parked on a quiet street, the stand of trees at the end of a culde sac that's left with blackened bark after an unexplained brush fire.

hhgregg replaces Circuit City in Hancock Village
      A new electronics and appliance store to Virginia will replace the Circuit City store originally scheduled to open at Hancock Village on Hull Street Road across from Woodlake. hhgregg will occupy 30,000 square feet, according to developer Doug Horack.

Clubhouses, concession stands are targeted
      Police continue to investigate recent burglaries and attempted burglaries of a number of area clubhouses, pools and concession stands. Most of the buildings showed signs of forced entry. An undisclosed amount of cash has been stolen during these burglaries. Police believe the incidents are connected.

Federal agents close Civil War relic-explosion case
      Federal authorities have concluded that Sam White was using an electric grinder on a Civil War cannonball when it exploded at his home in the 14100 block of Granite Pointe Court on Feb. 18, killing him. The 53-yearold collector of Civil War relics operated an ordnance-cleaning business out of his home.

Death ruled a suicide
      Police are investigating the suspicious death of a 38-year-old woman whose body was found in her family's home in the 5300 block of Graymoss Road on Aug. 6 at about 3 p.m. According to a state medical examiner's spokesperson, the woman, whose identity has not been released, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Crash results in fatality
      Police reported the driver of an SUV traveling west in the 10600 block of Nash Road lost control of the vehicle, overcorrected, crossed over into the eastbound lane and struck a small car. The crash occurred just before 7 p.m. on Aug. 6.

One injured in single-vehicle crash
      A single-vehicle crash on Aug. 9 around 9 p.m. injured the driver and critically injured a passenger. Police said a pickup truck was traveling north on Enon Church Road when the driver lost control in the 900 block, which caused the truck to leave the roadway and roll, ejecting the passenger. Both the driver and passenger were transported to VCU Medical Center.

Family first, says retiring Fire Chief Paul Mauger
      Rumors abound about why Fire Chief Paul Mauger is retiring, but it's no mystery to him. It's a matter of priorities. "I need to be with my family," Mauger explained. "In a couple of years my children will be leaving home. They need me now. As chief of this department, I have many responsibilities and that includes a lot of time in meetings.

Farmers' Cost Share program accepting applications
      The James River Soil and Water District is currently accepting early sign-up applications for the 2009 Cost Share program. The district offers the Cost Share program to farmers who work fields larger than five acres for assistance in conservation methods for their land.

Chemical leak at pool sends one to hospital
      One person was transported to the hospital after breathing toxic fumes from a dangerous chemical leak at a Battlecreek Drive pool earlier this month. The emergency call to 12630 Battlecreek Drive was dispatched shortly after 1 p.m. on Aug. 8.

Kindergarteners and sixth-graders need vaccinations
      The Chesterfield County Health Department is reminding parents that certain immunizations are required for children so they can attend school in the fall. Children entering kindergarten must have a physical exam and show proof of completion of a series of vaccinations, including shots for tetanus, polio, hepatitis B and others.

      The Capital Area Workforce Center, located at 7333 White Pine Road, offers an information session from 9 a.m.-noon each Tuesday. These sessions are intended to acquaint job seekers with the services available at the center. People are required to take one of these sessions if they plan to take advantage of the one-on-one services offered.
