Beginning this fall, John Tyler Community College (JTCC) students may enroll at the Chester campus, located at 13101 Jefferson Davis Highway, for the first of four classes that will prepare them to take the Cisco CCNA network associate certification exam. Those who earn this certification are trained to install, configure, operate and troubleshoot medium-size routed and switched networks; implement and verify connections to remote sites in a WAN; mitigate security threats; introduce wireless networking concepts and terminology; and use various networking protocols.

This is the first step in JTCC's plan to become a Cisco Networking Academy, a move the community college is taking toward meeting the increasing need for training for IT professionals.

Terrie Edwards, executive vice president of Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center for the past five years, has been named chief operating officer for Bon Secours Health Source, the system's physician practice group. Mark Gordon, current chief executive officer for Bon Secours in Russell, Ky., will take her place.

Dunkin' Donuts will mark the opening of its newest shop, located on Busy Street, with a weeklong grand opening celebration that includes free coffee all week at the new location. The week's festivities kick off on Monday, Aug. 25, with a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. performed by Lenita Gilreath of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce. On Friday, Aug. 29, Q94's Melissa and Sid will broadcast their show from there from 6-10 a.m. Enter to win a free one-year membership at Gold's Gym's Southside and Midlothian locations.

WiWalk is opening at the Shooters Indoor Sportsplex, located at 6140 Brad McNeer Parkway. The new company invites seniors to enjoy activities, such as Big Wheel bikes, indoor mini-golf, look-up beach ball and more, in this "senior playground." Admission will be free on Aug. 20, 21, 25 and 27-29, at 10 and 11:30 a.m. and 1 and 2:30 p.m. Call ahead for groups of more than 20. The facility's grand opening will take place on Sept. 2. The LifeWay Christian Store will celebrate its grand opening Aug. 23-Sept. 20 with special promotions, including a visit by VeggieTales' Bob and Larry and Hermie the Caterpillar. The new store, which will be located on Commonwealth Centre Parkway in the Commonwealth Plaza Shopping Center, offers Christian music, gifts, books, Bibles, children's products and church supplies.

The Commonwealth of Virginia's Division of Capitol Police, the nation's oldest police department and a full service law-enforcement agency that provides police and security services in and around Capitol Square, has announced the following promotions for county residents: Robert Toms has been named lieutenant, night watch commander; John McKee has been named lieutenant, planning and research; Stuart Hall has been named sergeant; Paul Bassett has been named shift sergeant, evening shift; Allen Norton has been named corporal.

James River High School 2008 graduate Ian Harvey recently received a scholarship to play baseball at Longwood University, a Division I school.

Midlothian Friends Meeting recently held its annual PeaceBuilders summer camp. The campers assembled 54 school kits to be donated to the Emergency and Material Assistance program of the American Friends Service Committee.

The charge for a single day admission to XZone Skatepark, located at 6851 Courthouse Road, has been reduced from $5 to $2, due to the overwhelming response to the park. Monthly and yearly rates have also changed. A monthly pass is $25 and a yearly pass is $200. Park hours are Monday-Saturday, noon-6 p.m. Sunday hours will soon be announced.

Boathouse Restaurant donated 25 percent of the proceeds of sales of the restaurant's signature dish, "Colossal Crab Cake Pommery," to Friends of Chesterfield's Riverfront for a period of time. The funds will be used for a volunteer citizen water-quality-monitoring program, which has a site on the Swift Creek Reservoir in Brandermill.

Alexis Smith, the James River High School 2008 salutatorian, was recently named Kick-Off Mentor of the Year by the national Kick-Off program. Hundreds of schools across the country participate in the program to help freshmen transition into high school. A scholarship is included in the award.

Pianist and Chesterfield resident Christopher Falzone recently graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

Danny Roberts, a Defense Supply Center Richmond contracting officer, recently received the Defense Logistics Agency's Award for Excellence for assisting service-disabledveteran owned small businesses.

"Rayna of Nightwind," a science fiction/ fantasy novel, is the first published book authored by Chester resident R.A. Baker.

Chesterfield resident Iris Mack wrote "I Will Be Well Again," which was published in February. The book encourages people to donate their kidneys to those who need them.

Angela Booker, an 11-year-old rising sixthgrader at Chester Middle School, traveled to Vitoria, Brazil, recently with her church's mission team. The group helped build homes for homeless people and gave out school supplies to the children there.

Eight Chesterfield residents will begin classes soon at Hampden-Sydney College, including Andrew Holt Belcher from Lloyd C. Bird High School, Paul T. Cottrell from Maggie L. Walker Governor's School, Nathaniel Whitney Cundy from James River High, Matthew Hamblin and Joshua E. Rivera from Manchester High, Christopher Donald Hruneni from Midlothian High, Bryan Perry Hughes from Cosby High and Emmett Allen Luck from Monacan High.

Between July 14 and Aug. 1, 249 Chesterfield County Public Schools students participated in one-week programs at the MathScience Innovation Center. Topics of the programs included crime scene investigations, robotics, computer programming, movie production, architecture and more.

The Chesterfield County Department of Utilities Addison-Evans Water Treatment Facility recently received the 10-Year Directors Award from the Partnership for Safe Water, which is a national volunteer initiative developed by the Environmental Protection Agency, the American Waterworks Association and other professional water organizations. Participants in this program are committed to providing their customers with superior drinking-water quality that surpasses required federal standards. Chesterfield's Utilities Department is one of only 12 facilities in the country, and the only facility in Virginia, to receive this award.

Chesterfield County recently won a Virginia Association of Counties 2008 Achievement Award for its Central Virginia Most Wanted program. The county's criminal justice and public safety departments created the partnership, which links the media, law enforcement agencies and corrections workers in nine area localities to help find fugitives.

The Chesterfield Conservancy, a private, nonprofit land trust dedicated to preserving natural land resources, has dissolved and donated its $550,000 fund balance to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for its programs in Virginia. The conservancy was formed in 2006 to promote the conservation, protection and prudent use of open space and natural resources in the county as a response to rapid development.

Jack Berberette has joined TeamLogic IT, a Midlothian-based computer consultation, managed-services and repair business, as a senior technician. He will service the computer needs of the company's business clients.

Ukrop's Super Markets and Uppy's Convenience Stores report that customers have saved more than $515,000 using the fuelperks reward program since its beginning on June 30.
