Church steeples could reach closer to heaven
      The Chesterfield Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on Oct. 21 for new guidelines regulating the heights of church steeples. Several churches want to increase the height of their steeples - perhaps as an opportunity to house a concealed cell tower to generate extra revenue.

     Lisa Billings/Chesterfield Observer - Facility coordinator Michael Fortune hangs a clock at Tomahawk Creek Middle School. The school will open to students for the first time on Sept. 2. Teachers are busy preparing their classrooms this week for opening day.

Suspicious fire claims several sheds and contents
      Firefighters were dispatched to a roaring shed fire at the 10400 block of Seacliff Lane on Aug. 19 around 4 p.m. Upon arrival, it was discovered several sheds along with nearby trees were burning. The sheds and all of their contents were destroyed. Crews were able to protect all nearby homes and vehicles.

Guilty plea in love-triangle

      Nelson N. Cruz-Urquilla, 32, an El Salvadoran immigrant granted political asylum and permanent residency by the U.S., has pled guilty to the March 16 murder of 25-year-old Eduardo Lopez, a fellow El Salvadoran.

Brandermill defeats proposed cell tower
      A proposal to install a 148-foot cell tower disguised as a pine tree on property owned by the Brandermill Country Club has been withdrawn by Invisible Towers. The company took the action the day after the Brandermill Community Association (BCA) Board of Directors voted 5-0-1 last week to recommend against it with member Bob Friedel abstaining.

Board to impose water rationing on Sept. 2
      At this week's meeting, the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors is expected to implement mandatory water rationing throughout the county effective Sept. 2 on the odd-even plan used last October. The rationing is required to meet the terms of its agreement with Richmond, which provides 20 percent of the county's drinking water.

Orienteering at Dutch Gap
      An orienteering challenge will take place at Dutch Gap Conservation Area on Aug. 31. Use a map and compass to complete a course of your choice, either on foot or on water in a canoe or kayak. Families are welcome to participate in this exploration of an area rich in history and wildlife, and to learn survival skills.

Local father to climb for son's cure

      Midlothian resident Keven McQueen will climb Mount Rainier in an effort to raise funds to find a cure for Fanconi anemia (FA), a rare, deadly childhood disease that has struck his 9-yearold son, Sean. FA is an inherited genetic disorder that primarily affects children, often more than one in a family, by attacking their bone marrow.
