Board shows support for neighborhood preservation
      The Chesterfield Board of Supervisors last week indicated it is ready to shift more emphasis to maintaining and sprucing up older neighborhoods in the county.

Chesterfield Observer circulation tops 50,000
      The Chesterfield Observer has increased its circulation by more than 10 percent to about 54,000. The circulation jump is a result of increasing the number of papers mailed from 39,064 to 45,051 with most of the increase occurring because the newspaper added households in the Chester zip codes of 23831 and 23836.

      The 2008 fall program guide from the county's Department of Parks and Recreation and school system's Office of Continuing Education is available at all county libraries and some county government buildings. It is also available online at www.chesterfield.gov.

      For firefighters, saving lives isn't just limited to the human variety. Sometimes pets need help, too. Such was the case on Aug. 24 around 10 a.m. when fire erupted from a home in the 8900 block of Germont Avenue.

Republican banquet scheduled
      The Huguenot Republican Woman's Club banquet will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Sheraton Park South Hotel, located at 9901 Midlothian Turnpike. Iraq War veteran and author Phil Kiver will speak about the importance of the 2008 election. He will also sign copies of his book, "182 Days in Iraq.

Mandatory water rationing is under way
      The Chesterfield Board of Supervisors has implemented mandatory water rationing throughout the county effective Sept. 2 on the odd-even plan used last October. The rationing is required because of low water levels in the James River, which provides 20 percent of the county's water needs.

Magnolia Green sues lender
      Magnolia Green Development, LLC, and two of its principals are suing its lender in U.S. District Court in New York for $250 million plus damages estimated to exceed $100 million. The defendant is iStar Financial, a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange with offices in New York.

County's school system attains adequately yearly progress once again
      For the third straight year, Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS) has made adequate yearly progress (AYP) as stipulated by the federal No Child Left Behind Act, inching closer to achieving the act's goal of 100 percent proficiency of all students in reading and mathematics by 2014.

School's open - watch for children
      Chesterfield-based AAA Mid-Atlantic is urging drivers to slow down and stay alert in neighborhoods and school zones through its 75th Annual "School's Open - Drive Carefully" campaign. Pedestrian injury is the second leading cause of injury-related deaths in the U.S. for children ages 5-15, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Seven-day search for fugitive ends in Greensville County
      A seven-day search for a man who assaulted a police officer after trying to fill a fraudulent prescription for Hydrocodone ended with his arrest in Greensville County the evening of Aug. 27. The search began after officers responded to the Walgreens at 20 Buford Road at about 6:20 p.m. on Aug. 20 to investigate a report of prescription drug fraud.

Man faces prostitution charges
      An officer on patrol near Ettrick Cemetery on the evening of Aug. 19 noticed a parked vehicle at about 9:30 p.m. Further investigation led to prostitution charges against Alwyn J. Floyd II, 41, of the 16200 block of Glebe Road. Floyd was also charged with trespassing in a cemetery at night and profane swearing and intoxication in connection with this incident.

Gun lawsuit settled
      New York City has reached a tentative settlement with Bob Moates' Sport Shop in Midlothian in a lawsuit over the sale of firearms to "straw buyers" who then resell the guns to criminals. The city sued 27 gun shops in Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia, alleging they contributed to gun violence in the city.

Teen sentenced to 45 years for slashing
      Cameron M. Valez, 18, was sentenced on Aug. 25 to three life terms for slashing a carwash manager's neck with a box cutter after robbing the business. Circuit Court Judge Michael C.

Police conclude shooting investigation
      Police have ended their investigation into the Aug. 2 shooting in the 3100 block of Dulwich Drive involving an on-duty Richmond Police detective and 43-year-old Mark Weaver. A police investigation of the incident revealed that Weaver approached plain-clothed detective Paul R.

Child fatally injured in car crash
      Christopher Goode, 6, of the 2200 block of Huguenot Springs Road in Midlothian, died on Aug. 21 of injuries he received in a two-car crash in Richmond on Aug. 14, according to Virginia State Police. The child was a passenger in a car traveling west on Forest Hill Avenue when a car turned in front of it at Hathaway Road at about 2:40 p.m.

Man linked to Hilton Head break-in
      Trevor B. Meccariello, 18, formerly of Chesterfield, has been linked by a DNA database to a burglary that occurred on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina in 2007, according to a Beaufort County, S.C., sheriff's report. Meccariello is currently serving time in a Virginia prison for burglary and other charges.

Some voters will get new polling places
      The U.S. Department of Justice has approved several voting precinct changes requested by the county, including moving four polling places and opening four new precincts. Changes will take place in some precincts in the Bermuda, Dale and Matoaca magisterial districts. Affected voters will soon be notified by mail.

Poll workers needed for November election
      About 200 additional officers of election are needed to work the polls for the November election, said county General Registrar Larry Haake. "They [poll workers] could be a part of a once-in-a-lifetime, historical election," he said.

Rally to benefit congressman's campaign
      The Chesterfield Fall Family Rally will be held on Thursday, Oct. 2, from 5-7:30 p.m., at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds to benefi t the re-election campaign of Congressman Randy Forbes. The cost will be $10 per person or $25 per family.
