Two festivals spotlight student musicians

Showcase of Bands, Sat., Oct. 4, 5 p.m., Midlothian High School, 401 Charter Colony Parkway. The Midlothian High School Marching Trojans presents its second annual marching band competition featuring 10 high school bands from around the commonwealth. Special guests, the Old Dominion University Marching Monarchs, will present their first-ever field performance. Cost is $5. Leaves in Fall, 10-11 a.m., Rockwood Nature Center, 3401 Courthouse Road. Take a short nature hike to discover the changing colors of leaves. Part of the Exploring Nature with Small Hands series for children ages 3-4. Cost is $4/child, and a parent or guardian must accompany each child (at no charge). 60 Hikes within 60 Miles, 10:30 a.m.-noon, LaPrade Library, 9000 Hull Street Road. Author Nathan Lott will offer recommendations on the best hikes for families, birdwatchers, serious hikers and history buffs. Part of the Get in the Know series for adults ages 55 and older. Free.
