      Diversity - It's a word both celebrated and feared. There are many who give it lip service, but how many really embrace it? And are our children actually learning it? That question and others were broached during a public engagement session on "Educating a Diverse Community" hosted by the county's school system last week.

Tax volunteers needed
      Computer literate volunteers are needed to serve at AARP Tax-Aide sites at Chester Library, located at 11800 Centre Street; LaPrade Library, located at 9000 Hull Street Road; Harbour Pointe Clubhouse; and the Goodwill store, located at 8535 Midlothian Turnpike.

The foundation supports the county's school system by providing financial and other resources.

Free GED tests in October
      GED tests usually cost $45, but first-time test takers who register in October will pay nothing to take the test. GED, or General Education Development, certificates are equivalent to high school diplomas. According to the Virginia Department of Education, by 2012, 70 percent of job opportunities will require a technical-skills certificate.

Happy Mother's Day!
      Thursday, Sept. 18, was Mother's Day - at least it was for me. To tell the truth, given the fact that I somehow turned out reasonably well-adjusted - despite what my mom had to work with - every day ought to be Mother's Day for me. I was small and lacking in streetsmarts, but that was all right.

Prevention Services plans education programs
      The Prevention Services unit of the county's Department of Mental Health Support Services will again offer educational programs this fall. "ADHD: A Parent's Tool Kit" offers parents or caregivers of elementary-age children with ADHD help in raising their child.
