Residents win skirmish, larger battle yet to come
      Some 200 residents, mostly from neighboring Bayhill Pointe, forced the 250-acre Francis Beers rezoning case to be withdrawn last week, but virtually everyone expects a return match next year.       Like a scene in a movie, two boys, ages 16 and 17, have been accused of robbing the Carmike 10 Cinemas at 1100 Alverser Drive. And as with any good cop flick, it didn't take police long to find the culprits. Shortly after noon on Sept. 21 as the theaters opened, a suspect entered the manager's office, demanding the manager give him the money from the safe.

County casts wary eye at state budget shortfall
      While taxpayers are anxious and angry about the financial problems at the national level, Chesterfield is concerned about the trickle-down effect of a $3 billion state budget shortfall. Virginia has yet to tell local governments what programs will be cut or eliminated, but both the county government and Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS) are bracing for the notice.

SkillsUSA to sponsor annual car show on Oct. 11
      The Chesterfield Technical Center's (CTC) chapter of SkillsUSA will sponsor its 11th Annual Car Show on Oct. 11, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at Tractor Supply Co., 6801 Lake Harbor Drive. Car clubs and individuals from across Virginia will display all types of vehicles, including classic cars, street rods, muscle cars, 4x4s and minitrucks. Admission is free.

      The Virginia Housing Development Authority and local nonprofits are offering free homeownership-education classes throughout October. Homeownership-education classes cover topics that include personal finances, credit issues, the role of lenders, working with real estate agents, home inspections and mortgage closings.

Recycling contest taking place during October
      It may pay to recycle in October. Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) will reward some curbside recyclers with cash just for setting out their recycling bins. Participants may win one of 20 daily prizes of $100 and be entered to win a $250 grand prize plus a recycling prize pack.
