Change is always on the menu in school cafeterias
      Have you "done lunch" with your children lately? Remember school lunches - meat loaf with mashed potatoes and gravy, hot dogs with greasy fries. Didn't each day of the week seem to have a menu of its own? Maybe there was spaghetti every Monday, pizza on Wednesdays and fish sticks on Fridays?

Christmas Mother fundraiser scheduled
      The Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother committee will host a fundraiser at Meadowbrook Country Club, located at 3700 Cogbill Road, on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 6-10 p.m. Festivities will include food, music and silent and live auctions.

Disability Awareness fair scheduled
      The Chesterfield Disability Services Board will hold its Annual Disability Awareness Information Day on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., at Chesterfield Towne Center. Local agencies and organizations will be on hand to provide information about services and programs for people with physical and sensory disabilities.

Ghost stories and a lantern tour planned
      Get into the spirit of the season on Oct. 24 and 25, from 6-8 p.m., at Henricus Historical Park, located at 251 Henricus Park Road, with an evening of spellbinding tales in a historical setting. Readjusting the formula
County, schools reconsider how money is split
      The county government and Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS) are reconsidering how funding is divided between the two. Currently, CCPS gets 51 percent of Chesterfield's $1.3 billion budget, with 44 percent of the school's operating budget coming from the county - much of that is driven recently by double-digit increases in property tax increases.

Visiting science author to explain nanotechnology
      In partnership with Virginia State University, Chesterfield County Public Schools will host a visiting science author. Nanotechnology specialist Richard A.L. Jones will work with Chesterfield students for two days and lead a panel discussion that is open to the public.

Grant will fund Perrymont after-school program
      Perrymont Middle School has won a $195,135 grant to provide a comprehensive after-school program. From 1:30 to 4:45 p.m. on school days starting this month, the after-school program will provide enrichment opportunities, homework assistance, tutoring, physical activity and social skills instruction for 48 students.

Libraries celebrate Teen Read Week
      To celebrate this year's Teen Read Week (Oct. 12-18) theme, "Books with Bite @ your library," two county libraries are celebrating with a program, "Get Your Scare On." Local artist Forrest Young will demonstrate how to draw monsters, goblins, ghouls and other creatures that might take a bite out of somebody.

Moving time
      It's fall - the flip side of spring cleaning time. Everything has to be moved when the weather turns chilly. Two hydrangeas need to be moved from the right side yard to the left because they need more shade. The purple butterfly bush needs a spot of its own. It is next to the rudbekkias and solidago and taking more than its share of the available space and sunlight.
