Salaries to remain secret
Brandermill to keep compensation from board
      The Brandermill Community Association (BCA) Board of Directors voted last week to keep the compensation of its staff secret - even from the board that is charged with approving the community's $2.4 million budget. President Joel Bradner knows the salary of Community Manager Jane Pritz but not of the other 20-some employees.

Collision made wall come tumbling down at residence
FIRE & EMS WATCH
      Bricks tumbled onto the sidewalk and a cloud of dust filled the air in the Park at Lakewood apartment complex when a driver lost control of a car on Oct. 3 around 6:30 p.m. and careened into a residence. Emergency crews from Bensley and Dale responded along with county police.

County asks again for Meadowville funding
      County officials got a sympathetic ear last week from Congressman Randy Forbes (R-VA 4th District) as they pitched for federal funding for a cloverleaf interchange at the Meadowville Technology Park to I-295 in eastern Chesterfield.

GED tests are free in October
      GED tests usually cost $45, but first-time test takers who register in October will pay nothing to take the test. GED, or General Education Development, certificates are equivalent to high school diplomas. According to the Virginia Department of Education, by 2012, 70 percent of job opportunities will require a technical-skills certificate.

Lawyer's license revoked

      The Virginia State Bar (VSB) Disciplinary Board recently revoked county attorney Dale Alan Gipe's license to practice law after he failed to pay $31,451 to a title agency for 27 real estate transactions.

Symposium to focus on local history
      The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia, in partnership with John Tyler Community College (JTCC), will present an author and speaker symposium on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m., in the Nicholas Student Center at the JTCC Chester Campus.

Supervisors establish citizen budget advisory committee
      The county board set up a citizen budget advisory committee last week and appointed five business people, most with financial backgrounds, to serve over the next two years. The idea germinated from the Budget and Audit Committee where Supervisors Dan Gecker and Jim Holland serve.

GED classes offered
      Instructor-led GED classes will be offered at the Capital Area Workforce Center, located at 7333 White Pine Road, on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. A learning lab will be available on Wednesdays, from 11 a.m.-noon.

Ettrick Fire Station to celebrate 80 years
      A community icon since 1928, Ettrick Fire Station is gearing up to celebrate 80 years of lifesaving and firefighting. On Saturday, Oct. 18, from 12-4 p.m., the station, located at 21200 Chesterfield Avenue, will have an open house to recognize its anniversary.

      The Chesterfield County Department of Youth Planning and Development is hosting the Chesterfield County Youth Forum, "WHY: We Hear You," on Thursday, Nov. 6, from 5:30-8:30 p.m., at Manchester Middle School, located at 7401 Hull Street Road. Middle- and high-school students, parents, educators, business professionals and concerned citizens are encouraged to attend.

Cub Scout receives National Medal of Merit
ANNOUNCEMENTS
      Michael Klotz, a 9-year-old Cub Scout from Pack 893 chartered by St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Midlothian, recently received the Boy Scouts of America National Medal of Merit, which is given to members of the Boy Scouts on recommendation of the organization's National Court of Honor.
