County predicts slower growth
      To the surprise of no one, Chesterfield planners are forecasting slower population growth as the economy and homebuilding gear down. The current population of 311,000 is expected to grow to 347,400 by 2014, an annual growth rate of 2 percent, if 2008 doesn't dramatically change the trend. That's down from the 2.3 annual percent rate from 2000-07.

HHHunt pulls the plug for now on Branner Station
      It could become a sign of the times - HHHunt has suspended its plans to build Branner Station on 1,614 acres southeast of Chester. Just approved last year, Branner Station called for 2,449 single-family homes, 1,331 condos and townhouses, 908 apartments, 300 assisted living units and 470,000 square feet of office and retail development.

      With the economy in trouble and family finances strained, Greater Richmond Area Scholarship Program (GRASP) advisors will visit all county public high schools to offer personal and individual assistance with the search for financial options to make college more affordable.

New chief selected for Fire and EMS department
NEWS BRIEFS
      The county has selected Norfolk Fire Chief Edward Loy Senter Jr., 45, as the new chief of its Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services. Senter will take the helm in Chesterfield beginning Nov. 17.

Bagged bear
     Photo courtesy of Adam Creswell Adam Creswell killed this black bear with a compound bow and arrow earlier this month while hunting in the Route 360 corridor in the western part of the county. Weighing in at about 300 pounds, it's the first bear killed in the county with a bow on record with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Creswell was hunting deer in a tree stand when the bear ambled into the woods and into his line of fire.

Bill Carfrey Memorial 5K Turkey Trot
      The Woodlake Swim and Racquet Club's Fifth Annual Bill Carfrey Memorial 5K Turkey Trot will be held in Woodlake on Sunday, Nov. 9, beginning at 2 p.m. The run will start at the East West Legacy Park Pavilion. The fee is $15 per adult (11 years old and older) and $10 for children 6-10 years old. Children younger than age 6 will be free.

      The Chesterfield Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will sponsor an education symposium on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., at Meadowbrook High School, 4901 Cogbill Road.

      The planning commission last week deferred making a decision on a proposed site plan for 246 apartments in the Midlothian Towne Center project on Midlothian Turnpike at Winterfield Road until January.

Matoaca rezonings denied
Questions are raised about fairness and process
      The Chesterfield Board of Supervisors last week denied four rezonings amid complaints from two board members, the applicants and their attorneys about whether the cases were being treated fairly. Each of the applicants asked to have their cases remanded back to the planning commission for more work - primarily to resolve road problems.

Getting out the vote
Parties prepare locally for presidential election
      Ask anyone on the street and you'll find consensus that this year's presidential election will be a memorable one, regardless of the outcome. Chesterfield's turnouts in the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections were 70 percent and 74 percent respectively, and Registrar Larry Haake figures the county will come in this November at around 80-85 percent.

Registrar calls for "patience" at the polls on Nov. 4
      Chesterfield Registrar Larry Haake delivered the same message to the county board of supervisors last week that he has been telling residents and groups at numerous community meetings: be patient at the polls on Election Day.

      Polls will be open from 6 a.m.-7 p.m. on Election Day. To avoid the longest lines, Registrar Larry Haake recommends voting in the late morning or from 1:30-3 p.m.

      On a grassy knoll in Chester sits a charming, brick 1927 Colonial-style house with a full basement, carport and screened-in porch. I found living there a "feisty, young" lady of 91 years of knowledge and age. To protect her privacy, I will call her Mrs. Paulie.

A hearty thanks
      Police Chief Thierry Dupuis serves roast beef to volunteer Dennis Wilt during a recent volunteer recognition ceremony. At the event, Dupuis thanked volunteers for their time and commitment to the police department. More than 200 people volunteer within the department or with groups, such as Crime Solvers, the Chesterfield County Police Foundation and others.

Tools for Schools program served scores of children
      The Tools for Schools program, administered by the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Department of Social Services, served 681 children this year with donations and support from those communities. In 2007, the program served 546 children.
