Schools enforce standards during homecoming dances
James River High bars Observer from dance
      In the aftermath of this newspaper's Oct. 15 story on dirty dancing at Clover Hill High School, principals at all high schools are being told to enforce rules for "acceptable behavior" at their dances. Signs of fall
      Whether you peer into your backyard, cruise the roadways or stroll through county parks, signs of fall are appearing. The landscape is transforming from a verdant canopy to a spectrum of colors. Sweetgum trees color the forests with scarlet and orange, sometimes yellow and even purple. Winged sumac adds a rich crimson, and tulip poplar provides a soft yellow.

Nominations for Clover Hill High Hall of Fame sought
      The Clover Hill High School Athletic Hall of Fame is looking for nominations for its sixth induction class. The induction will take place at a dinner on Feb.7, 2009, at Bishop Ireton Lodge. The cost will be $25. Those nominated must have been out of high school for at least 10 years.

      By the end of yesterday I was exhausted. When I got out of bed I looked at the temperature to decide whether to dress for a high of 65 degrees or the morning low of 38. So I layered and shed throughout the day.

Library opening on Nov. 10
     Patrons will find more space, added seating and workspace and additional publicaccess computers with Internet access at the new Meadowdale Library, located at 4301 Meadowdale Blvd. It will open on Monday and be dedicated on Nov. 14 at 3 p.m.

Schools provide extra time for students
      No matter what school they attend, many students always seem to have an excuse as to why their grades aren't as good as they could be. Perhaps their evening was too busy to cram in finishing all that homework, or their test score is low because they didn't have a way to stay after school for tutoring.
