Grange Hall teacher wins national award of $25,000
      Laura Marshall, a third-grade teacher at Grange Hall Elementary School, received an unexpected treat during a school assembly late last month when she received a $25,000 Milken Educator Award. Only a handful of people knew the reason for the specially called assembly in the Grange Hall gym; Marshall was among those who did not know.

Gardening/wildlife workshops for kids
      Chesterfield County Cooperative Extension master gardeners, in cooperation with the Richmond Audubon Society and Chesterfield County's Rockwood Nature Center, will offer a series of free gardening and wildlife workshops for kids this fall and winter. Each of the programs will be held at the Rockwood Nature Center, located in Rockwood Park, 3401 Courthouse Road.

Once upon a time...
     Page Dowdy/Chesterfield Observer Melanie Moore, a junior at Monacan High School's Center for the Humanities, reads a story to Crenshaw Elementary School kindergarteners, Jaiveon Arthur and Sophia Jimenez, in celebration of Virginia Read Aloud Week. Humanities center students traveled to Crenshaw last month to deliver a collection of donated books and read to students there.

John Tyler to conduct registration for spring classes
      John Tyler Community College (JTCC) will hold registration for spring 2009 classes through Dec. 23. Course options include day, evening, weekend and Internet classes. A complete list of available classes may be found online at www.jtcc.edu/schedule.

Chester Kiwanis Christmas parade set
      The Annual Chester Christmas Parade, sponsored by the Chester Kiwanis Club, will be held on Sunday, Dec. 14, beginning at 2 p.m. The theme this year is "Up on the Housetop." The parade route will run on Route 10 from the Chester YMCA at W. Hundred Road to Chester Village Green at Centre Street. Route 10 will be closed along the parade route beginning at 1:45 p.m.

The Pleasure of Life
      I often say that "life is good, except when it's not." About two months ago, our family lost Abbott, our cat of 18 years. It was very sad, but while it is still hard some days, we recently decided to put ourselves out there again, and we got a dog.
