Board appoints 12-member multicultural commission
      The county's Board of Supervisors last week unanimously appointed 12 citizens to serve on the Multicultural Advisory Commission that was created last January. Dale Supervisor Jim Holland was the board's strongest proponent while Bermuda Supervisor Dorothy Jaeckle expressed some reservations.

Probation and parole office is still looking for new site
      The Virginia Department of Corrections (VDC) is trying to decide where to relocate its probation and parole office, currently located in the 11000 block of Iron Bridge Road.

Little accomplished at legislative dinner
      The Chesterfield Board of Supervisors and other county leaders had dinner last week with its legislative delegation, but state funding issues - specifically for transportation - were hardly discussed. Most of the 35-minute meal was taken up by a presentation of the county's financial situation including lower state revenue.

Chesterfield Observer circulation tops 54,000
      An independent audit for the Chesterfield Observer for September/October 2008 reported an average weekly circulation of 54,278, a 15.3 percent increase from the same period in 2007 when the audit showed an average of 48,365.

Winner for life
     Lisa Billings/Chesterfield Observer - Styles Bi-Rite manager Lori Woodel congratulates lottery winner Harold Warren during a prize ceremony at the store last week. Warren won the top prize in the Virginia Lottery's Win for Life game and will receive $1,000 per week for the rest of his life. The store received a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Car turns 7-Eleven into a drive-thru on Chester Road

      There were some hair prickling moments at the 7-Eleven located at Centralia and Chester roads on Nov. 10 shortly after 8 a.m. when a car crashed through the front door of the occupied store. "The vehicle went into the store," said Lt. Matt Coffin of Chesterfield Fire and EMS, "and happened to go down the center aisle.

JTCC Philosophy for Lunch series scheduled
      Associate Professor Brie Gertler, head of cognitive science at University of Virginia, will speak on the topic, "Does the Mind Extend Beyond the Body?" on Dec. 8 as part of John Tyler Community College's fall Philosophy for Lunch series. The presentation will take place from noon-1 p.m.

Training available for landscape professionals
      Chesterfield County Cooperative Extension has reserved two seats for landscape professionals for its upcoming master gardener training program. In lieu of volunteer services, professionals may join the training to brush up on a topic or two, or many, by signing up for individual classes at a cost of $25 per class, or $500 for the entire program.

St. Francis Medical Center to add more beds to facility

Elderfriends will deliver holiday baskets
      Elderfriends, a volunteer-based visitation program, will partner with Virginia Commonwealth University's Department of Gerontology to collect, assemble and deliver "Friendly Baskets of Cheer," while spending time visiting with isolated older adults during the holiday season. This venture offers a onetime volunteer opportunity for community members who wish to get involved.
