Tips to help avoid vehicle thefts

The police department's Crime Prevention Section is encouraging residents to take preventive measures against vehicle theft. Police have investigated more than 51 reports of stolen vehicles since Sept. 1. Of those vehicles, over 22 were left unlocked and idling. Most victims left their vehicles running, unlocked and unattended.

Police offer the following crime prevention tips:

• Always lock your vehicle.

• Never leave your vehicle running and unattended. Convenience stores, gas stations, ATMs and your home are easy targets for thieves.

• Do not leave your keys in the vehicle.

• Always park in well-lit areas.
