Bleach bottle causes alarm

The county's hazmat team was dispatched on Apr. 6 around 6:48 p.m. after receiving a 911 call about a suspicious bottle on a porch in the 16000 block of Gary Avenue. Upon arrival, crews discovered a bleach bottle that was swollen and misshapen. Since the contents were unknown and could have been explosive, the Virginia State Police was called in. Officers used a device to puncture a tiny hole in the bottle, releasing the pressure.

The bottle's contents were then tested and found to be household bleach. No one's come clean yet on who put the bottle on the resident's porch.

The incident was marked under control at 8:50 p.m. Chesterfield police were on the scene, as well as Chester Engine #1, Battalion Chief #2, a tactical safety officer and an ambulance from Airport Station #15.

Enon fireboat battles island fire

Enon Volunteer Fire Department's fireboat, a specially-equipped Boston Whaler rescue and firefighting vessel, was called into action on Mar. 28 at 5 p.m. for a blaze on Cobb's Island on the Appomattox River in Prince George County.

Hopewell crews were tied up with a brush fire call, and Enon was dispatched under a mutual aid plan.

After Enon's #6 Engine was set up on shore, the fireboat transported firefighters to the island where they used hoses to extract water from the river to fight the fire.

According to Enon District Chief Bruce Vecchioni, this was the first time the fireboat had been used to battle a brush fire. The operation took about four hours, and the situation was marked under control at 9 p.m.

Prince George's Police Boat assisted, and Hopewell arrived on scene after their previous call was under control. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Stove fire

The emergency tones sounded, and multiple stations responded to the 9700 block of Shiloh Drive on Mar. 26 around 6:30 p.m. for a possible house fire. Upon arrival, a small grease fire was discovered.

All responding units, except Centralia Engine #17 and the tactical safety officer, were placed back in service. After the fire situation was under control, the firefighters installed a smoke detector for the family.
