Lee wins Bernard L. Savage Community Service Award

Quenton Lee, president of Midlothian Electric Company, has been named the 2008 Bernard L. Savage Community Service Award winner by the Chesterfield Business Council. He will be recognized at a special awards breakfast on Tues., Apr. 29, at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in Chesterfield. Lee was chosen from a select group of entrepreneurs because of his leadership in chairing the Village of Midlothian Day Parade and his commitment to outstanding community service. The parade is a highlight of the Midlothian Village Festival & Craft Fair, which has been held annually since 1993.

In other announcements: County resident Sande Snead recently won six awards, including four of them for first place, during the Virginia Press Women's 2008 Communication Contest. Snead is a contributing writer for the Chesterfield Observer. Lori Ross, of Ross Publishing in Midlothian, won five awards.

Martha Steger, freelance editor for SeeJane- Edit from Midlothian, won four awards.

Seven Bettie Weaver Elementary School students won the statewide 2008 Daughters of the American Revolution contest and will now move on to represent Virginia during the national competition. Junior American Citizens winners included Alyssa Hill (grade 4, poster), Taylor Knabel (grade 4, stamp design), Jessica Todd (grade 4, community service project), Ellie Brinto (grade 4, poem) and Sara Hamilton (grade 4, short story). Fifth-grader Holly Rice was an American history essay winner. There were also winners from Woolridge Elementary School. Junior American Citizens winners there included Rob Witherspoon (grade 3, photo essay), Joel Calfee, Jessica Butler and Grace Hicklin (grade 4, banner), Cecie Negron, Haley D'Amelio and Evan Urso (grade 5, banner), and Jordan Wilcox (grade 5, short story).

Benjamin Hart and Mara Blumer in Mrs. Nadia Biddle's third-grade class at Swift Creek Elementary School make chocolate-dipped cookies and pretzels for the Greater Gator Mall.
Seven county residents were recently named to Bryant & Stratton College's President's List. They are Pamela Fitzsimons (Chester), Christina Samuel (Chesterfield), and Tammie Meadows, Taisha Robinson, Rosela Rowell and Donna Stein (Midlothian). To make the list, students must be full time and earn a 4.0 grade-point average for the last semester.

Diane Ball of Chesterfield County has returned from her second deployment to Iraq with the Defense Logistics Agency Contingency Support Team. She is a business process analyst working on the enterprise business system help desk in Defense Supply Center Richmond's Procurement Process Support Directorate.
Swift Creek Elementary School thirdgraders recently created their own stores and companies as part of the Greater Gator Mall. Combining lessons in civics and economics, students produced products such as chocolate dipped cookies, foam bookmarks, bunny baskets, magnets and more and then sold them to second-graders. Students made a profit of $364 and donated the money to the Child Rescue Center where they will sponsor a child in Sierra Leone, South Africa.

John R. Morgan of Woodlake has been named executive director of Voices for Virginia's Children. Morgan previously served as the organization's senior policy analyst. He is a child psychologist and long-time human services administrator and children's advocate. Voices for Virginia's Children is a statewide, not-for-profit children's policy research and advocacy organization and a member of the national Voices for America's Children network of state policy organizations.

Erin Clarke, a fifth-grader at Clover Hill Elementary School who lives in Woodlake, has been selected to attend the weeklong "People to People" World Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C. this week.

Thomas Dale High School has begun raising funds to replace its band uniforms. The Band Boosters is striving to raise $45,000 as a start since the uniforms cost $450-$500 each. Some of the current uniforms are 10 years old. Contributions can be made by calling Band Director Steven Barton at 768 6245 ext. 671.

John and Karen Kalita have opened Pump It Up, a franchise of giant, indoor inflatable playgrounds available for private children's birthday parties and events for sports teams, schools, field trips, corporate team-building and other outings. Haley Ford of the Haley Auto Group has earned the President's Award from Ford Motor Company. The dealership will also display two limited edition Ford Mustang Shelbys this month. Only 1,000 of them were made.

Angus Dentistry celebrated its new location with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Apr. 4 at 2400 Pinehurst Dr. in Midlothian. More than 50 members of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce attended the ceremony and met Drs. Frank L. Angus, F. Lee Angus and Rebecca Angus. Winners of a recent Midlothian Garden Club floral competition were Ruta Goodwin for her Chinese fringe flower in the horticulture category and Linda Kreynus for her iris and daffodil creation in the design category.

Curves of Midlothian is joining Olivia Newton-John in the fight against cancer through the Great Walk to Beijing 2008. As a worldwide presenting sponsor, Curves is pledging a minimum $1 million donation to the event. Anyone can take part in the walk by visiting www.greatwalktobeijing.com.

First Baptist Church in Midlothian has recognized Dorothy Viney Turner for more than 70 years of service to the church and community. She served as a Sunday School teacher, musical director for the Children's Choir and organ/piano player for the church. She was also active in the Baptist Young People's Union. She organized the first Family and Friends Day and other special programs, including deacon installation services, and was the inspiration for and a founding member of the Christian Women United ministry.
