Some say that the celebration of Mother's Day originated in ancient Greece as a festival to Cybele, thought to be a great mother of Greek gods. Here in the U.S., President Woodrow Wilson declared the first official American Mother's Day holiday in 1914.
Although Mother's Day continues to be one of the most commercially successful occasions in the U.S., many moms still prefer the love and attention that goes into the homemade gifts created by their children. Here's what a few county moms had to say about their best gifts and wishes for their children:
Pattie Pinchbeck
"My mother gave me a (certificate for a) pedicure at the Red Door Spa once, but the best gift I ever received was from my daughter, Lauren, who spent the money I gave her to buy souvenirs while on a class field trip on a gift for me instead! It was a sun-catcher that was beautiful. My greatest wish as a mother is that my children grow up happy and healthy."

"The best gift I ever received was my only girl born to me, and my greatest wish for my children is that they go to heaven but not now!"
Kristen Walker
"The best Mother's Day gift I ever received was a homemade card from my daughter, Olivia, because you keep them forever. It was signed by her when she was only 2 years old, and it's just a big 'O!' My greatest wish for my child would be that she is happy in the world because, when it comes down to it, it's not about the money and material things - it's about the happiness you see your child living."
Jennifer McGrath
"Last year, my kids clipped the word 'mom' out of the newspaper and created a collage with just the one word. It was the best gift because they did it themselves. My greatest wish for my child is that they are healthy and happy children that turn into healthy and happy adults, that they're secure with who they are."

"The best gift I've received was a card from my sister made up as though from my child. It was very touching and special. Expensive gifts are nice, but this card was special. My most important wish for my child is that I would impart to her the things that are closest to my heart. Most importantly, my relationship with God and that she would live her life for him."
Carrie Nunes
"The best Mother's Day gift I ever got was when my girls cleaned the house for me! My wish for them is that my girls grow up to be successful, healthy and happy young women."
Tracy Williams
"The best gift I've ever received is my son, Jacob. He's a precious gift from God that I will always treasure. My greatest wish for Jake is that he be a faith-filled young man. We all want everything wonderful and perfect in our children's lives. With his faith, he can do anything, handle everything and be anything he wants to be."
