School board adds fifth goal to strategic plan

The Chesterfield County School Board recently added a fifth goal to its Design for Excellence, the school system's six-year strategic plan for continuous improvement and vision achievement.

The Design for Excellence goals are:

Goal 1 - Academic excellence for all students

Goal 2 - Safe, supportive and nurturing learning environments

Goal 3 - Knowledgeable and competent teachers and administrators

Goal 4 - Community investment in schools

Goal 5 - Effective and efficient system management

 

The school board originally adopted the strategic plan last December with four goals. Goal 5 incorporates recommendations from curriculum-management and communication audits, which the school system sought as a way to continue to make progress toward its vision for 2012 of every county school being a thriving, dynamic and inspiring educational environment.

In other announcements: Thirty Chesterfield students attended this year's Regional Governor's School at the MathScience Innovation Center, taking courses that focused on the sciences, mathematics and art, including Dylan David and Stephen Thompson from Carver Middle; Bailey Galstan from Chester Middle; Emma Copeland, Reed Dibich, Miles Greatwood, Jacob Mendel, Emma Williamson and John Williamson from Manchester Middle; Hanna Bennett, Rachel Galton, Jacob Getzler, Tatum McKay, Brianna Moore, Caitlyn O'Brien, Grace Oh and Gregory Scott from Matoaca Middle; Zara Siddiqui and Stephen Stepp from Midlothian Middle; Kari Brookmire, Richie Cole, John Coogle and Hunter O'Neill from Providence Middle; Sky Festog, Jeanetta Fricke and Jaz Harnal from Millwood School; and Walker Jones, Kevin Kaperick, Alexandra Todd and Gregory Winder from St. Edwards-Epiphany School.

Recipients of scholarships given by TerraForge include Philip Dewire and Sydnee Hammond from Lloyd C. Bird High School, who were each awarded $2,000; Janis Krausee from Cosby High School, who also was awarded $2,000; and Nathan Reese, Michael

Ny, Lesley Brooks and Yesenia Escolastico from Meadowbrook High School who were each awarded $4,000.

Midlothian resident Elizabeth Eikelbarner Daly made the spring 2008 dean's list at the University of Delaware.

Midlothian resident Andrew Cosby, a junior attending the Myers-Lawson School of Construction at Virginia Tech, was recently awarded a scholarship from the Northern Virginia Homebuilders Association.

Michael Swope, a rising junior at Thomas Dale High School, is one of two teens selected to play in the Wal-Mart First Tee Open Golf Tournament at Pebble Beach in California over the Labor Day weekend. He will be making his second consecutive appearance at the tournament

Faculty from James River High School gave presentations during the recent 16th Annual Model Schools Conference. Laura Lay presented about social studies practices, Mary Ellen Fines and Sharon Hoffert presented best math practices, and Bryan Carr presented on school counseling topics.

Thomas H. Berry recently retired from the county's Utilities Department after 38 years of service.

Jennifer Seiden is the new director of quality management for Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center.

Chesterfield County was recently designated as one of the nation's newest Preserve America communities by First Lady Laura Bush, honorary chair of the Preserve America initiative. Preserve America is a presidential effort that seeks to encourage and support communities as they take measures to preserve their historical, cultural and natural assets.

Intermark Design Group has completed the installation of the Bayview model at Heron Pointe for D.O. Allen Homes. The model home, which is located off Genito Road, a half mile west of Woolridge Road, is open Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday-Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
