Chesterfield Technical Center students perform well in SkillsUSA competition

More than 200 guests attended including State Senator John Watkins, Bank President & CEO Tom Winfree, Chesterfi eld's Deputy County Administrator Pete Stith Jr., Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce President Lenita Gilreath and Banks, Village Bank's canine mascot. The bank now has 15 branches in metro Richmond, including eight in Chesterfield County. It celebrates its ninth birthday this month.
Students from the Chesterfield Technical Center (CTC) recently garnered numerous awards during the SkillsUSA Virginia competition. SkillsUSA Virginia is an organization for students in the commonwealth's high schools and community colleges who are enrolled in courses to prepare them for working in career and technical occupations. Winners include:

• In advanced cake decorating, CTC students took the top five awards - Marie Joyce, Monacan High, first place; Ashley Full, Thomas Dale High, second place; Adriannah Johnson, Thomas Dale High, third place; Jessica Estes, Monacan High, fourth place; and Victoria Estes, Monacan High, fifth place.

Photo courtesy of Community High School Chesterfield Community High School student chefs Ray Allen, Juhahn Robinson, Camauri Williams and Antonio Greene, along with instructor Chef Thomas Sears, recently served up a great lunch to the school's Students of the Month. The meal consisted of roast turkey, sautéed green beans, au gratin potatoes and fresh pumpkin pie.
• In beginner cake decorating, Alyssa Agee, Thomas Dale High, won second place.

• In advanced knife skills, Collin Wagner, Midlothian High, won second place, and Erik McCandless, L.C. Bird High, took fourth place.

• In individual baking, J. Estes and Karla Otero, both from Manchester High, and Joshua Brown, Thomas Dale High, each won first place. Ashley Full and Knakeesha Samuels, both of Meadowbrook High; Lyndy Broomfield, Midlothian High; and Katherine Baltzell, Monacan High, each won second place. Knakeesha Samuels; J. Estes and Brittney Isaac of Monacan High; and Samantha Cliborne, Thomas Dale High, each won third place.

Photo courtesy of Stephanie Lagasse Six-year-old Chesterfield resident Reagan Lagasse recently had 10 inches of her hair cut off at Les and Company Hair Salon in order to donate it to Locks of Love, an organization that makes wigs from human hair for cancer patients who've lost their own hair while undergoing chemotherapy. This was Reagan's second donation to the group. She first donated hair when she was 4 years old, and plans to grow her hair long enough to donate again.
• In heating, ventilation and air conditioning repair, Josh Richer, Meadowbrook High, and Mike Wilkerson, Thomas Dale High, won second place.

Holland
• In original computer illustration, Stevonte Stewart, Meadowbrook High, won first place; Morgan Barker, Monacan High, took second place; and Jeremy Codiroli, Manchester High, won third place.

• In digital art, Morgan Barker won second place.

• In electronic media, Dominique Woods, Meadowbrook High, took Best of Section.

• In desktop publishing, Dominique Woods won first place; Jessie Ransom, Manchester High, took second place; and Riley Lescault, Cosby High, won third place.

Teachers of these students at the CTC include Carol Kimmel, baking; Mark Kimmel, culinary arts; Ron Clarke, heating, ventilation and air conditioning; and Anne Savedge and Dave Holicky, digital image and design.

Midlothian Cadette Troop 994 recently traveled to New York City where they visited the National Girl Scout Headquarters, Ellis Island, the NBC television studios and saw the musical "Wicked." Troop leader Doreen Rice, Alice Babashack, Danni Coppino, Maddie Grotewiel, Diane Coppino, Tallie Hausser, Cheryl Yanoschak, Rachael Yanoschak and Holly Rice visited "The Today Show" (above). Troop leader Leslie Hausser also enjoyed the trip.
Education

CTC culinary students won first place in a competition at the Chefs' Seafood Symposium, sponsored by the Virginia Chefs' Association. Team members are Collin Wagner, a Midlothian High senior; Amanda McAlister, a senior at Monacan High; and Erik McCandless, an L.C. Bird High senior.

Bettina Hinckle, a social studies teacher in the Mass Communications Specialty Center at Manchester High School, is one of 25 participants selected from across the U.S. for this year's Educators to Saudi Arabia program. She will spend 10 days in the country visiting schools, areas of cultural and historical significance and industrial facilities to expand her knowledge and understanding of Saudi Arabia, including its culture and values.

The Virginia High School League bestowed its highest award, the Torch of Honor, on Manchester High School Principal Pete Koste. He is the only Torch of Honor recipient this year.

Two graduates of Clover Hill High School's Math and Science Center, George Washington (2006) and Briana Satchell (2007), recently placed second in a national computer programming competition. They will represent the University of Virginia (UVA) at the international competition in Stockholm, Sweden, in April. This is the first time UVA has placed in this competition.

Chesterfield student Jesse Limbacher, a senior instrumental music major at the Appomattox Regional Governor's School for Fine Arts and Technology, composed an original score for the school's recent production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

The 130-member James River High School Regiment marching band, under the direction of Keith Cottrill, has applied to march in January's inaugural parade. The band was recently awarded a "superior" designation by the Virginia Band and Orchestra Director's Association (VBODA). The school's band program has received VBODA Virginia Honor Band recognition for the past 14 years, which requires that both the marching and concert bands receive a "superior" rating. Chesterfield Community High School (CCHS) recognizes students monthly for their academic progress, behavior and attendance. October Students of the Month were Carlyle Allen, Erica Candido, Adam Coghill, Kaitlin Davis, Javon Free, Antonio Greene, Tashan Harrison, Niquelle Henderson, Taylor Jackson, Patrick Johnson, Jamie Jones, Brittany Martin, Keisha Matheiu, Alexis Meyer, Andrew Moreland, Danielle Orbe, Sharnesha Pryor, Brandon Seabrook, Diamond Spurlock, Johnny Wertz, Raymeka White, Shaw'Nae White and Rachel Wilkes.

The Tau Rho chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at John Tyler Community College's Chester campus recently welcomed the following county residents as members: Donte Allen, Sara Anders, Jeanie Bailey, Marjorie Cobb, Erin Decker, Robert Diaz, Renee Estep, Charles Farmer, Margaret Hershey, George Houck, Alena King, Steven Miles, Monica Robinson, Danielle Schafer and Rachel Soper. The Midlothian campus's Beta Omicron Omicron chapter of the organization welcomed as members Chesterfield residents Kathryn Ashworth, Monica Gonzales, Kristen Keys, Adina Keys, Cynthia Martin, Robert Miller, Andrea Moncada, Allison Newman, Ian O'Keefe, James Ritter, Michelle Stewart and Sarah Swatosh. Phi Theta Kappa recognizes the academic achievements of community and junior college students.

The fourth-grade class at Woolridge Elementary School sang patriotic songs and read essays during a Veterans Day program to honor the country's veterans. Col. Stewart Boone McCarty, president of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, presented the school with a Certificate of Distinguished Service for presenting a Veterans Day program every year since 1990.

Chesterfield teachers receiving R.E.B. grants of $750 include Tina Bowman, Grange Hall Elementary School, Rebecca Horton of Manchester Middle, Charles LaRocca of James River High and Heather Sinnott of Watkins Elementary. The R.E.B. Awards for Teaching Excellence program, a partnership between the Community Foundation and the R.E.B. Foundation, recognizes excellence in public education by awarding cash grants to outstanding public school teachers in the metro Richmond area.

Nick Daly, Anne Martin, Courtney Austin and Tripp Hughes marched with the James Madison University (JMU) Marching Royal Dukes in the 82nd Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade last month. All are graduates of Midlothian High School. Daly, a freshman at JMU, plays alto saxophone; Martin, a sophomore, and Austin, a junior, play piccolo; and Hughes, a senior, plays clarinet.

Chesterfield students at the Appomattox Regional Governor's School for the Fine Arts and Technology recently participated in the annual Virginia Theater Association state conference, garnering the following awards and honors: Lindsey Ackerman, Emily Bradner, Kelsey Cappiello, Danielle Crapanzano and Corinne Jacob won first place in the Technical Olympics; Maggie McGrann won first place for mask making; Kelsey Cappiello took second place for scene design; Maggie McGrann was a member of the first-place team in on-the-spot playwriting; and Lindsey Ackerman, Sarah Bain, Erin Bradner and Emily Bradner received an honorable mention superior rating for "Flight of the Lawnchair Man."

Letitia Johnson's Chesterfield County GED students are partnering with the county's Parks and Recreation Department to keep the Government Center Trail clean. The students will walk the one and a half mile trail every other week to clear it of debris and trash, then will use their writing skills to complete trail survey reports. They will also learn to identify wildlife and plants that are found along the trail, use map-reading skills and learn building skills by constructing a park bench to be placed on the trail.

Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS) won seven awards, more than any other school system in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia or the District of Columbia, in the 2008 communication contest sponsored by the Chesapeake chapter of the National School Public Relations Association. The honors included Awards of Excellence, which is the highest award, for the annual report/parent handbook, kindergarten registration information and speechwriting. CCPS also won an Award of Merit for op-ed writing and an honorable mention for a budget-information page, "Schools Today" community newsletter and the "WOW! Factor" employee newsletter.

Arius Aibara was recently named a semifi- nalist in the Society for Science Middle School program. Completed during his eighth-grade year at Manchester Middle, his science project focused on turbulence and wing shape. Arius is currently a ninth-grade student at James River High.

Wal-Mart has named Richard Rowland, a second-grade teacher at Marguerite Christian Elementary School, and Tina Clarke, a fourth-grade teacher at Providence Elementary, as Teachers of the Year. Wal-Mart honors one teacher for every Wal-Mart and Sam's Club throughout the country. The Chesterfield teachers were among the more than 4,000 teachers nationwide who received $1,000 for their schools and a $100 store gift card for personal use.

Ginny Heintzelman, physical education teacher at Spring Run Elementary, has been named Virginia's Jump Rope for Heart Coordinator of the Year.

The American Heart Association recognized Spring Run Elementary School for raising the fourth highest amount, $18,994, through Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart events.

The Red Cross Club at Clover Hill High School recently conducted its annual blood drive - its most successful yet. Virginia Blood Services received 111 units of blood from the drive, meaning Clover Hill High students and staff may help save more than 300 lives.

Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Russel Honore, commander of Joint Task Force Katrina, will be the speaker at Virginia State University's 2008 fall commencement on Saturday, Dec. 13. Almost 300 graduates and their families are expected to participate in the university's fifth fall commencement. Honore was dubbed the "Category Five" general for his work in beginning the task of putting New Orleans back together after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Monacan High School graduate Liza Perdue recently won a $150 cash prize in a research essay contest sponsored by Longwood College's Greenwood Library. She is the daughter of Jim and Katey Perdue of Midlothian.

Woolridge Elementary School was recently recognized by Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) for having 250 school families pledge to recycle. Each recycling Woolridge student received a lanyard made from recycled plastic bottles.

Business

CVWMA recently gave prizes to creative recyclers as part of their celebration of America Recycles Day 2008. Chesterfield youth winners include Elias Lynch for his recycled aluminum keychain and Ethan Coe for his recycled bike chain key ring. County adult winners include Victoria Johnson for her recycled junk mail stationary and Lisa Shipley for her handbag made from recycled tires.

Winners in CVWMA's recent recycling contest included Chesterfield residents Katina Bartal, Kathy Feiring and John Flippen. The three received $100 each for properly preparing their recycling bins and having them set out on their assigned collection day by 7 a.m.

Village Bank is partnering with Toys for Tots this year to help make the season bright for children in need. Through Dec. 16, drop off new, unwrapped toys at any Village Bank branch. Toys for Tots will get them where they are most needed in time for Christmas.

Swift Creek Academy of the Performing Arts is partnering with the Manchester High School Lancer Band for the second year to present Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 10:30 a.m., at the high school, located at 12601 Bailey Bridge Road. The Lancer Band and the academy's SCAPs and Celtic Reflection will perform, as will the Hands & Pans steel drum ensemble. Tickets will be $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-12. Children younger that 5 years old will be free. Tickets are available in advance by calling Christopher McCarney, director of the Lancer Band, at 739-6275 ext. 108. Tickets may also be purchased at the door. Proceeds will support performing groups of both the academy and the high school.

The U.S. Postal Service recently visited the Ukrop's Supermarket located at 11361 Midlothian Turnpike to provide customs forms and special boxes so customers could conveniently fill them with holiday goodies and post them to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan in time to arrive for Christmas.

Aiki Juku Chesterfield Dojo in Hampton Park recently conducted an Aikido training camp, with demonstrations by Jean-Charles Walti, a master instructor, and Gilbert Cars, an instructor, both from Switzerland. Midlothian resident Anne Moss Rogers has been contracted by IDesignInteriors.com for search-engine-optimization copywriting and other Web marketing services. She also has been contracted by Virginia Correctional Enterprises to develop print marketing materials for its work-release program.

Government

The U.S. Postal Service has opened a new contract postal unit at Lucky's Woodlake convenience store, located at 14746 Village Square Place. A full line of postal services will be offered Mondays-Fridays, 8 a.m.-8 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. For more information, call Kris Lydon at 775-6386.

Treavor Sapp, an automotive technician with the county's Fleet Management Division, recently retired from the Chesterfield County Department of General Services after more than 21 years of service.

Battalion Chief Robert P. Avsec recently retired from the county's Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department after 25 years of service. He served at the Dale, Manchester and Midlothian fire stations in positions that included firefighter and shift administrative officer. He was co-director of the Emergency Communications Center and battalion chief of Emergency Operations and the Training and Safety Division. He also participated in instructing the U.S. Secret Service in incident command.

Defense Supply Center Richmond (DSCR) recently held its annual tree lighting ceremony with the Bensley Elementary School fifth-grade chorus singing holiday carols. A couple of Bensley Elementary students helped Brig. Gen. Andrew Busch, DSCR's commander, to pull the switch that lit the tree. Before all was done, Santa arrived in a fire truck.

Chris Ruth, assistant director of the Chesterfield County Department of Public Affairs, will serve on the Regional Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee, a regional committee formed by the Petersburg Area Regional Tourism Corporation to develop events and marketing programs designed to attract visitors during the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War.

Dale District Supervisor James M. Holland has been appointed by Gov. Tim Kaine as chair of the Board of Commissioners of the Virginia Public School Authority for a term of six years. Organizations

The Chesterfield Chorale Society recently performed for the public and residents of Dunlop House Assisted Living Facility in Colonial Heights.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Richmond & Tri-Cities recently recognized their outstanding volunteers and supporters during their annual holiday celebration at the Holiday Inn Select-Koger Center. The group serves a number of children in Chesterfield.

The Chesterfield Women's League, a service and social club, will hold a meeting at Foxfire Clubhouse, located at 5536 Fox Light Parkway in Moseley, on Dec. 17, from 10 a.m.-noon. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. The meeting will feature Stephen Dalton, owner of Half-Baked Ideas, which sells unique, handmade, mixed-media jewelry. The meeting will also be a holiday party with refreshments. A Secret Santa gift exchange will be optional - bring a wrapped $15 gift to participate. Newcomers are welcome. The Weaver Athletic Association minor, junior and senior competition cheer squads competed recently at the 2008 Chesterfield CCL Spectacular. All three squads placed first in their divisions.

The Beulah Colts junior team recently celebrated the end of its football season at a banquet held in the meeting room at the newly constructed Meadowdale Library. The Colts appreciate the support of the library, as well as that of Food Lion, Ukrop's, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, McDonald's and La Ru Chelle.
