Four prostitution arrests

NEWS BRIEFS
Gwen Sadler

Four people have been charged in connection with a prostitution services operation running out of a residence in the 6100 block of Strathmore Road.

Cuevas-mendez
Angelica Cuevasmendez, 32, of the 2800 block of Camberwell Road, and Emiliano Garcia-sis, 50, of the 6100 block of Strathmore Road, were arrested on Feb. 5, both charged with keeping or frequenting a bawdy house and receiving money from the earnings of prostitutes. Cuevas-mendez was also charged with money laundering.

Jose M. Camacho Gomez, 40, of the 2100 block of Johnson Street, and Yanira Guerrero-andrade, 25, of the 8300 block of Sunset Drive, were also arrested on prostitution charges on Feb. 5 in connection with the same case.

Lawyer's license revoked

The Virginia State Bar Disciplinary Board revoked attorney Charles William Austin Jr.'s license to practice law on Jan. 23.

In consenting to the revocation, Austin admitted to allegations included in three pending misconduct cases, and said he couldn't defend himself if disciplinary charges were prosecuted.

Allegations of misconduct against Austin include telling clients in two actions for securities fraud that he had filed their complaints when he hadn't and making other misrepresentations, and, in a separate case, taking funds he wasn't entitled to from a monetary settlement that should have been held in trust.

Guerrero-andrade
Richmond shooting

The Richmond Police Department's Fugitive Task Force has made an arrest in the Feb. 6 shooting death of Chesterfield resident Kepler Louis-Charles Jr.

Police responded to a call around 7:15 p.m. about gunshots fired in the 3200 block of Garland Avenue, where they found Louis-Charles, 21, lying on the ground. He'd been shot in the stomach and was transported to VCU Medical Center where he later died.

Dale Garnettee Wallace Jr. was arrested without incident on Feb. 9 after calling police to turn himself in. He is charged with conspiracy to commit murder and use of a firearm by a convicted felon.

County sees heightened business activity

Chesterfield County appears to be bucking the slow growth trend nationwide. According to Chesterfield Economic Development, business investment in the county was up 150 percent in 2008 at $138 million compared to $55 million in 2007.

New jobs last year also increased 30 percent to 668 from 516.

Will Davis, director of the economic development department, reports the list of active prospects jumped 32 percent to 127 from 96. The number of calls by his department on existing businesses in Chesterfield also increased to 111 (up 78 percent) from 64 in 2007. Typically, more than two-thirds of the business growth in the county comes from businesses already here.

Thief takes only a drink

A man who apparently intended to steal the cash from a convenience store left with only a drink he didn't pay for.

At about 4:30 a.m. on Feb. 6, the man set his drink on the counter at the 7-Eleven store in the 7000 block of Hull Street Road as if to pay for it. Once the clerk opened the register, the suspect pulled out a knife and demanded money. The clerk stepped back, then walked away from the counter, heading toward the store's office. The suspect picked up his drink and left the establishment.

The suspect is described as a white male, 6 feet tall, weighing 250 pounds. He is sporting a tattoo on his left forearm.
