Super Radiator Coils named Business of the Year

Super Radiator Coils has been in business for 80 years and in Chesterfield locations for 28 years. The company designs and manufactures heat transfer coils for residential, commercial and industrial markets. The coils are part of condensers for residential air conditioning systems, but are also used in coal-fired power plants and on IBM super computers. The company president is Rob Holt, and Ray Birk is the vice president of operations. Birk also is leading the voluntary business effort to revitalize Midlothian Turnpike (see story on page 4). The award is given to a leader in business growth, community service and valuing employees. Super Radiator Coils also earned the Innovation Impact Award. That award is given to businesses that create a new market or enhance existing markets and make a positive impact on consumers' lives while significantly improving the company's revenue and profitability. The economic development department also gave its Community Impact Award to Bank of Virginia for the bank's volunteer work in the community, which includes company sponsorship of community-focused events and company and/or employee monetary contributions to local charities. The bank's president is Frank Bell, and Michelle Hastings is the marketing director. The Employee Impact Award was given to ACAC Fitness & Wellness Center for focusing on inactive adults and their families and seniors with medically-based programming and services. This award goes to companies who value their employees. The company president is Phil Wendel, and the general manager is Joyce Steed. Organizations Benita Robertson, a participant in a corporate intern program at Defense Supply Center Richmond (DSCR), has founded a chapter of the National Young Government Leaders organization. Membership is open primarily to young government employees at DSCR and other local agencies, but plans are in the works for outreach to local communities and schools through tutoring and other events. MetLife Insurance has donated $1,500 to the National Forum of Black Public Administrators' Central Virginia chapter, which includes Chesterfield, and has become the first member of the chapter's local corporate advisory council. Volunteer Emergency Families for Children (VEFC), based in Midlothian, has received a 2009 Governor's Volunteerism and Community Service Award. VEFC offers hope to abused, neglected, runaway, homeless and at-risk children by finding emergency placements for them with volunteer families across the state. New officers for the Brandermill Woman's Club include Jo Owens, president, Katy Nastanovich, first vice president - programs, Susan Smith, second vice president - membership, Pat Bliedorn, treasurer, Pat White, recording secretary, and Debbie Ellis, corresponding secretary. The Delta GEMS, the Chesterfield alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, recently sponsored a domestic-violence workshop for teens and pre-teens facilitated by Patricia Jones-Turner, coordinator of domestic violence for the county. Workshop materials addressed respect, dating violence, children who witness domestic violence, sexual assault and domestic-violence prevention. As Girl Scout Troop 582 sold their cookies, they collected contributions to send 150 boxes of the treats to U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan. The troop includes Ashley Coddington, Sara Deriso, Sarah Dobson, Shannon Dugan, Taylor Evans, Skylar Lockleay, Erin Scanlon and Alexus Swallford, all students at Spring Run Elementary School. Their co-leaders are Emily Deriso and Liz Shoulders. The Brandermill Community Association Board of Directors has elected its officers for 2009-10. They include Joyce Rowe, president; John McLenagan, first vice president; Bob Friedel, second vice president; Dick Guthrie, treasurer; and Joel Bradner, Jason Livingston and Keith McGinniss, directors. Community manager Jane Pritz will serve as secretary. The Chesterfield Jaycees will sponsor a silent auction for Camp Virginia Jaycee on Thursday, May 21, from 7-9 p.m. at BlackFinn Restaurant, 1001 Haxall Point in Richmond.
